Top 5 Places to visit in Italy - Getting the Best out of Italy

The great Roman Colosseum - Architectural Wonder
The great Roman Colosseum - Architectural Wonder

Today in this article, I have presented the top five tourist destinations in Italy. All web pages on travel services will give you only general information for you to plan a trip to Italy and these sites will put a description of each Italian city or each region of Italy. However, I do not want to bore you by saying the same lines that "Rome is the historical capital of the Roman Empire or where and how to shop in Milan which is the second largest famous city of Italy. After going through various travel-related websites, I have found that the information provided by them is common which prevents you from making a precise decision or timetable for your visit to Italy.

In short, I would say that by reading any article on the net, you may not know everything that country or city has to show but then also what I will do is that I will give you a summary of not only specific tourism destinations in Italy, but the best or most popular places that this country has to offer tourists. It is important to note that there are not only5 or 10 tourist destinations in Italybut there are much more, but visiting all of them in one trip is really difficult, so the idea is that you know some best destinations to visit in Italy to make a list of priorities and the most important"your Italy vacation itinerary", so let us begin the journey.

Roman Colosseum (Rome)

This is one of Rome's most famous tourist attractions. Colosseum was built between 70 to 82 AD. The Colosseum is currently the most representative architectural structure of ancient Rome. At one time, this magnificent building was able to accommodate 50,000 or more bloodthirsty spectators to see different public events among which the most famous was the "Fight of Gladiators". The formidable architectural beauty was not consistent with the atrocities that were committed in the sand, but today when this shameful practice is stopped, the Colosseum has become a unique piece for human history. If you have seen the famous movie "Gladiator", you can figure out what I am trying to say.

Vatican - Rome - Italy
Vatican - Rome - Italy

Vatican (Rome - Vatican)

The Holy See is the official residence of the Pope, but beyond its religious importance, the Vatican has a fascinating and amazing architecture that attracts a large number of tourists every year. The Sistine Chapel painted by Michelangelo is the cherry on the cake to The Vatican. In the Sistine Chapel, the mirrors and the dome of the chapel are the most impressive boundless beauties. It is extremely unhealthy to spend hours walking with the neck extended and head fully reclining back, so much that the back is touching the neck so mirrors are used to enable visitors to view the roof by directing the light "towards the ground" and the visitors can look out for the most interesting architectural points with the angles of the mirror. A large number of people visit this place throughout the season because of the amazing beauty of this architecture.

The leaning tower of Pisa - Not planned but is leaning.
The leaning tower of Pisa - Not planned but is leaning.

The Tower of Pisa (Pisa)

The famous Leaning Tower of Pisa was born and bowed, of course not intentionally, but since the start of its construction in 1173, the tower began to lean slowly. Many people believe that the tower of Pisa is leaning on purpose and many others believe it is a monument in itself. Neither belief is true, the inclination of the tower was never planned but it leaning on its own.

The Tower of Pisa does not stand-alone, but there is a steeple of the Cathedral of Pisa which is just meters away from it but that does not go into any photo as the tower takes the spotlight. Now after years of work, the tower is open to the public to climb the 294 steps that go through the 8-story building until the bell.

Adventurous and romantic Venice Canals in Italy.
Adventurous and romantic Venice Canals in Italy.

Grand Venice Canals (Venice)

This Sinking City is an attraction to the whole planet. Tell me about a single travel enthusiast on earth who does not want to go to a City covered with water. The architectural beauty of Venice, its canals and bridges, is unmatched, unique, and beautiful. Venice is a must visit tourist place in Italy. A part of Venice has canals and visitors can travel by gondolas to have a look on the beauty of this place. While traveling in gondolas, you will find that the Venice Canals is long chain of narrow streets. Furthermore, the romance of travel by gondola is ultimate. Travel through the canals of Venice is a magical experience, which no one should miss.

Capri Island - Italy - Experience the heat of love.
Capri Island - Italy - Experience the heat of love.

Capri

Capri Island is called a paradise by tourists, which is located in the Mediterranean and has become a preferred tourist destination. The beauty of its beaches and the island itself makes it a popular destination among famous celebrities. The island of Capri is a different destination in Italy. It is for people who are looking out for leisure, sun, and the beach and not the history and architectural wonders of Italy. Capri is ideal for days out in the middle of tourist travel in Italy to return to the mainland for further admiration of the splendor of Italy's culture and history.

Hi Soni,

I have a little different idea of the perfect Italy. Florence is considered the Treasure Chest of art in Italy...If you go to Italy and miss Florence (Uffizi Gallery, Michelangelo's original David and many of his unfinished sculptures) you will be very unhappy later on when you compare notes with other travelers. Capri is fun but Cinque Terra is historic and also a huge party place. You take a little train from city to city there as you wind along the beautiful coastline. In Rome, do not miss the Vatican Museum and the Sistine Chapel. Thow a coin in Trevi Fountain to assure that you will return one day. Google them for the reason's why. Milan for fashion as well as to see the original Last Supper. Brush up on how to avoid being a victim of pick pockets and you will do just fine in Italy. We did waste a half day stopping off in Pisa on our way to Cannes. I say lose that one and substitute Cinque Terra. In Venice, visit a glass factory and sample the eels in black ink sauce. Watch out for the Grappa. Ciao!

Hi Soni,

Now you have a solid excuse to return to Italy. We have been 3 times and have only scratched the surface. We have yet to go south of Rome or North of Venice.

Right now we are watching for deals on airfare to Greece.

Yes, Florence is a major or sought after place I hear too. Now that you brought up Capri it is on my list. Monte Carlo even tough it is independent?, I still associate it with Italy.

I could easily live six months a year in Florence and bask in all they have to offer. Rome, it's okay but "been there, done that" after the first or second time. The rest is great but my absolute home base would have to be Florence - it is beyond compare in my humble book.

soni2006 profile image

soni2006 6 years ago from New Delhi, India Author

Thanks a lot The Rope for your sharing your viewpoint on visiting Florence and choosing that as your home base, also I can see a lot of google adsense ads related to booking hotels and accommodation in Florence which is a nice place to write on. I think it is worth to make a hub on it and you can do it as I think you have got good personal experience relating to the same.

Hi,

I'm an American living in southern Italy (Puglia) which is an amazing region. It is less known to American travelers but very popular with Europeans. If you are interested in coming to Italy or to our region and need advice on anything from culture to how to get around.. don't hesitate to ask...Many of the how to's here are not common knowledge.

Thank you so much jenniferoutwater for helping people on how to's about visiting Italy. I will definitely ask you any doubts I have regarding visiting Italy. Thanks for being so helpful again Jennifer. You have got some qualities which are not seen in many people. Helping others is a very good quality and this quality helps in getting lots of appreciation and praise for your work done.

Don't forget also the Duomo in Milan, which is the cathedral in the downtown/city centre of the city. There's also the Galleria, that is right next to the Duomo. For something to eat, there are plenty of cafes, but an unknown treasure to tourists is Luini, on Via Santa Radegonda, 16 (http://www.luini.it) for an awesome "Italian fast food" lunch or snack.

soni2006 profile image

Thank you so much amborg for adding up Duomo in Milan and Luini to the top places to visit in Italy. Frankly speaking, I do not have a great deal of information on these places and that is why I have not added them here.

I live in Umbria, half way between Rome and Florence, I have to say Florence is my favourite place and if you love country walks the Umbrian landscape is beautiful to walk around. It doesn't matter where you go in Italy there is something of wonder to see. Pompeii is not to be missed, Cinque Terra is a magnificent place. The list is endless, just come over and see for yourself.

You have been very good at suggesting some of the most attractive places to visit in Italy. I was born in the south, but I live in Tuscany now.I wish you a good writer to write more about the south where you can find many beautiful cities such as Lecce with its baroque architecture, the nature of the Gargano and Catania or Palermo in Sicily.

As an expat living in Tunisia, I'm an Hour flight from Rome. I've been there more than 10 times in the past 2-3 years. Can't get enough. The Spanish steps in Rome, although extremely crowded, is simply the magnet of the city. See it for yourself. It is also home to the best shopping and designers in Rome. Amalfi Coast near Napoli is certainly one of the most romantic places in the world. Google it you'll see. The Chianti Classico region in Tuscany between Florence and Sienna with its vineyards and hilltop villages is gorgeous. Book a cooking course while there...unforgettable. Enjoy!!

Nounours 4 years ago

Oh, and don't miss up the lake district, north of Milan. The area of Lake Como is really quaint and sophisticated with great villages, beautiful mansions, high gastronomy, and all this with the alps in the background. You're an hour away from a mountain pass that leads you to Switzerland. Priceless scenery.
