Travel To St Kitts

Updated on November 3, 2012

I traveled to St Kitts for a New Years vacation and it was a blast !

Travel to the islands of St Kitts and Nevis and your are traveling into the smallest independent nation in the Western Hemisphere. St Kitts being about twice the size of Nevis is where my plane landed. The land is lush and green with a dormant volcano-poking up or at times hidden by clouds. Upon arriving at my Frigate Bay hotel, I was immediately struck by the kindness and good nature of the people there. I was lucky enough to get an end view room, probably one of the few rooms on the island with both a view of the Atlantic Ocean to the west and the Caribbean Sea to the east.

I arrived on December 30th and left on January 3rd. On my first full day I did an island tour. Touring on St Kitts is a bit informal, basically having a cab drive you to see the sites. The first stop I was taken to was Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park. Entertaining and historical, this UNESCO World Heritage site sits about 800 feet up a rocky hill, providing an excellent view of the Caribbean Sea and surrounding islands. Although I wasn’t up for the challenge, you can always climb Mount Liamuiga. Along the way you’ll notice both beautiful flowers and fauna. The surrounding rainforest has an abundance of small monkeys, butterflies and birds.

On New Years day carnival is celebrated in downtown Basseterre. About 1 p.m. or so the local folks line the main streets of the city in anticipation of the parade. Lasting for hours, children and adults participate in the parade as well as watching. This experience, a combination of dance, rock, reggae, jazz, calypso, and any other Caribbean African fusion that you can imagine is freaky good. In other words a lot of fun, I mean a lot of fun for young or old. The parade ends downtown at The Circus. On January 2nd there is also a bit of more of the carnival, although a bit less organized than the day before-probably due to everyone’s tiredness from the day before.

In my opinion, St Kitts is a good place to have a relaxing vacation at. However it is a great place to spend New Year Eve and New Years Day at. Try to see you there next year !

Enjoy This St Kitts Video !
