10 Great Vermont Breweries
Vermont is a vacationers dream in the northeast. Every season offers something unique and wonderful for a vacation. Perhaps best known for its winter prowess, Vermont offers some of the best skiing in the northeast throughout the state, with well groomed mountains, comfortable lodges and good food. In the spring, farmers markets and fresh produce begin to arrive with one of the most popular mini-seasons, maple syrup season. The summer offers great hiking, cool mountain lakes and sunsets in the mountains followed by the beautiful northeast foliage in fall.
One of the best features about Vermont is it commitment to local food, and the quality of what the farmers and culinary experts can produce. The same is true for the local beer brewed throughout the state. There is great beer to match every activity and each season, and it is all brewed with pride in Vermont. If you are thinking of taking a trip and love beer, live in Vermont and want to know your local breweries a bit better, or just love beer in general, there are dozens of choices in all corners of the state. Here are ten of the best 'can't miss' breweries that are sure to please even the most discriminating of tastes.
Remember, drive safely and have a designated driver if you plan to have a few beers. Make sure to eat something before you head out, drinking on an empty stomach is never a good idea. Also, remember that brewers are often happy to talk about their passion. If you want to know more about beer or its process ask and see if there is a brewer or brewmaster around to chat, you will get firsthand knowledge from a passionate individual.
Burlington and Northwest Vermont
Burlington is the largest city in the state and offers some of the best dining and beer in the northeast United States. The downtown features great atmosphere especially the car free Church Street.
Vermont Pub And Brewery,
One of Vermont's best known small brew pubs, Vermont Pub and Brewery, affectionately referred to as VPUB by locals offers a wide variety of beer and pub food. The brewery features outdoor dining, and a casual atmosphere. This is one of my favorite breweries in Vermont and it is always a pleasure to visit. Vpub offers not only standard brews but specialty small batch and cask brews sure to please the beer aficionado (snob) in all of us.
Magic Hat Brewery
One of Vermont's largest breweries, Magic Hat has its main production facility in South Burlington. While the brewery does not offer food, or a cash bar, it does offer a great tour and a unique atmosphere. Magic Hat does have a tasting area where you can sample their terrific beers. With great artwork, a unique vibe, and the option for a unique tour experience, this is a can't miss brewery.
Zero Gravity Craft Brewery @ American Flatbread
American Flatbread is one of the great and unique restaurants in Burlington. Here you can enjoy the two foods that were destined for each other: pizza and beer. On top of that you can enjoy both knowing they are prepared lovingly and with great skill. This is a place sure not to disappoint the discriminating beer and pizza lover.
When touring Burlington it is easy to travel through all three of these destinations in one day. American Flatbread and VPUB are within a short walk and Magic Hat is just a quick trip away. If you travel to Burlington make sure to stop at all three.
North Central Vermont
Rock Art Brewery
Rock Art brewery is one of the shining stars of Vermont's breweries. Big flavors, bold beers and a huge variety makes this one of the most popular breweries in Vermont. The brewery offers tastings and tours daily Monday through Saturday. Its location close to Stowe makes it a great day trip if you are in the area,
Trapp Family Lodge
With more than just a brewery the Trapp Family lodge offers vacation activities year round. Good food, good beer and an outdoor paradise makes the Trapp Family lodge a must visit attraction. Being in Stowe means you have plenty of opportunity to get out and visit a great mountain town. Trapp features four unique lagers on tap, and if you are a lager fan is a great place to visit.
Central Vermont features three of the 'big boys' of Vermont brewing.
Otter Creek Brewery
Now brewing not only Otter Creek beer, but Wolaver's and The Shed beers this newly renovated brewery is a great place to taste a variety of beer. Featuring a small pub menu and just minutes from downtown Middlebury Otter Creek is a great place to stop for a bite and some tasty brew while traveling through central Vermont.
Long Trail Brewery
Perhaps the most famous Vermont brewery Long Trail Brewery has a slight off the path location in Bridgewater Corners Vermont. Featuring a tour of their eco-friendly brewery, a full bar and restaurant and a short drive to cozy Woodstock Vermont, there is no reason to pass up on the Long Trail Brewery. A popular destination you are sure to find at least a few people hanging around the bar, or grabbing a bite to eat year round.
One of Harpoon's two breweries is located right in Windsor Vermont. The brewery features weekend tours (Friday Saturday and Sunday) and a restaurant with a beer garden. One the eastern side of the state Harpoon is a great destination when travelling through Vermont toward the coast. With a huge variety of wonderful seasonal rotating beers will make you want to take the trip to Harpoon each season.
McNeill's is a smaller brewery located in Brattleboro Vermont. However, the beer that comes from McNeill's is some of the best in the world having been presented with over a dozen national and international awards. One of my favorite brewers I highly recommend making the stop to grab a pint. The brewery pub is a great place to grab a beer, but make sure to call ahead if you wish to schedule a tour.
Madison Brewing Company
Another great small brewery in southern Vermont is the Madison Brewing Company. Madison offers a pub style restaurant with at least a half dozen unique beers on tap. Located in Bennington Vermont, Madison is a great place to visit when travelling through the southern Green Mountains and makes for a great place to celebrate entering Vermont when travelling north.
