Where To Find RV Parks and Housing Near the North Dakota Bakken Oil Field Job Sites

RV Living For Work And Travel Can Be A Good Option

Oil Projects in North Dakota Fast-Tracked by the White House

The number of new oil wells approved for North Dakota increased to 500 total in 2012, with 200 new wells already in place in the western part of the state. Many more wells are planned for construction.

By 2035, the number of new wells will be in the thousands. More people will be moving to the oil patch cities and more housing will be needed, but RVs are a good start on housing.

On October 10, 2011 President Obama fast-tracked 80 applications for Oil and Gas Projects in the North Dakota/Little Missouri National Grasslands.

The infrastructure improvement projects in the Grasslands were named among 15 highest priorities for oil and gas projects in America. The oil boom has continued to expand in the state through 2015 and is expected to continue further.

By 2035, the number of new wells in North Dakota will be in the thousands.

Major oil drilling continues in this Native American Reservation town; non-natives are hired as well. Hundreds of new wells on the way!

RVs and Campers

Northwest North Dakota

One of the major sites in the North Dakota Oil Boom is New Town, North Dakota, south of Highway 2. RV campgrounds there and in the surrounding area include the list provided below. At least 40 new oil wells were scheduled for drilling in 2011, but the area can support several times that number.

Located on native reserve land to which non-natives are welcomed to work, the oil fields here await additional release of approved federal funding to help with 1) local oil drilling and refining and 2) refining of incoming Canadian oil via pipline. It is predicted that the yield of oil from North Dakota will reach 24,000,000,000 barrels and that Halliburton will hire 11,000 workers in late 2011 - early 2012.

New Town: Four Bears RV Park

  • 202 Frontage Road, New Town, ND, 58763; (800) 294-5454. The RV park has expanded from 30 to 85 full-hookup parking sites. Golf and Billiards on site. Current rate advertised in October 2011 is $12.72/night for stays of longer than 30 days. Price is double for fewer than 30 days. The RV park is about 1/4 from the Four Bears Lodge on Lake Sakakawea approximately 5 miles southeast of the center of New Town. The lodge has a number higher-paying jobs as well, given the icnreased tourist trade and gradual influx of new workers.

Additional RV Parks are located along Highway 2 and about 23 - 25 miles from New Town, as listed below:

Epping ND:

  • Epping RV & Camp- Seasonal park, open May through October. (701) 570-7222

Williston ND

  • Buffalo Trails Campground. Includes pull-through and big rig sites and allows pets. Listed as Family friendly as well.
  • Fort Buford. 15349 39th Ln NW. Maximum stay listed in 2010 as "4 days", but may change with hosuing needs in the area. Pets are welcomed. Call for current season and vacancies. (701) 572-9034
  • Prairie Acres. 13853 Highway 2 in Williston. Pull-through and big rig sites, pets accepted. Wi-Fi on site, public phone, library, other. Call for current operating season and vacancies. (701) 572-4860

Additional RV Parks are likely to be constructed to accommodate incoming workers and their families. IN the meantime a sort of housing shortage is beginning in later 2011, as predicted by the Three Tribes on whose reservation much of the oil is found. Long-term affordable housing is needed and has been proposed. Additional infrastructure construction begins already for other building needs.

Patty, in addition to being a Class One Researcher, you're also thoughtful. What RV owners would not appreciate you mapping out these routes? Good hub and voted USEFUL.

MsDora - Thanks for posting! More RV parks need to open soon and they all need to be open year around. There are likely some others in all the small towns around Minot.

Because of the upsurge in jobs connected with the oil and gas industry in North Dakota, state unemployment is reported in the media at far below the national average - around only 4-5%. Creating additional housing might be a good business opportunity here.

Geographically those RV parks look far apart. I wonder if the Oil Companies will just create their own camps for employees. Nothing says fun more than working 12 hour days of labor in the middle of nowhere in sub freezing temperatures and coming "home" to a nice cozy trailer. Yikes! I think these people deserve the higher wages they earn. The term "fast tracked" is kind of interesting in light of how slow things have been moving. I guess nothing spurs a presidential campaign like a double digit unemployment rate.

The RV Parks north of New Town on Route 2 are approx. 23 to 26 miles away and the Lake park is closer. The others are farther form New Town, but that city on the reservation is not the only one that needs workers. Several recent news reports tell us also that workers are sleeping on floors in local residents' homes, so housing is definitely a big need.

Great Article. I just saw an article about the situation here for the guys and there families and the lack of housing solutions. This is a great hub for anyone considering an RV for housing option.

Well, fingers crossed that RV spaces are open in thes places to new works with campers, carvans, and motor homes. I will continue to look for more. Some business people could go in and build more RV Parks - and they'd better not charge too much money!

I heard about a bus that was driving workers to the oil fields, so I hope that is a reality as well.

If anyone has any job leads that would be great. I am looking for a job where I can work 60+ hours a week Min. Something that is 2 weeks on one off or a similar schedule so I can go back home and see the wife and kids. any help would be great. I have applies at a ton of places on line but have not heard a response yet. maybe I have to be a little more patient.

Excellent post. My in-laws from Grand Forks were visiting over the holidays and we discussed RVs for those going to work in the Bakken. Remember, it will be VERY VERY cold. Fortunately, the people are wonderful, and the pioneers made it in worse conditions (and raised families like my husband's)! Vote up ... :-)

I am currently out of work, but I don't have an RV, so moving from Asheville, NC for a job in North Dakota is not a practical option for me. Nevetheless, this is good information for those who are pursuing that route.

Nate - Call the people in the thread that left contact numbers!

Check the "North Dakota" state craigslist for more listings for housing, but take care, because some of them are getting too expensive. Good luck!

Nate 5 years ago

thank you. we are thinking of bringing a camper behind my truck...

rj 5 years ago

Going to start making some calls will be interesting to see if there might be any rv sites available. Would like to find a room till spring then bring the 5th wheel up if things work out. Hate the thought of setting up in below 0 temps. This could be a real addventure. Did a few winter contracts down in Antarctica so winters in ND are real close just not as long and a lot more people. Thanks for the site big help.

Jamie 5 years ago

If anyone is looking for an RV, we have over 200 in stock, and our prices are fantastic. Unlike the other dealers in the area taking advantage of this boom and price gouging, we can offer you the same RVs for thousands less, and deliver them right to your jobsite. Please contact me at wholesalervsales@gmail.com for a list of pricing, availability, etc.

Thank you.

Thanks Patty, I have searched and searched for info, it is mind boggling! I think we better get them to drive out there in the car first and try to find something in advance..or the train from here is only $62.00

The train sounds reasonable! Driving gives more flexibility, tho. I WISH some more building of homes and apartments had been going on out there for these job seekers since 2010.
