What is the proper way to deal with letters addressed to previous residents?

   What is the proper way to deal with letters addressed to previous residents?
   
   I keep getting letters addressed to the woman who lived in my apartment before I moved in.  What is the proper way for me to return them?

   I always write, 'no longer resides here' and place them back in the mailbox.

   I write  "No longer lives on this address - Return to Sender."  Now I feel like singer that song.. Return to sender, address unknown...

   I also write 'no longer lives here' on the envelopes unless that person is deceased.  Now that we have lived here for going on 6 years...if we get junk mail for the former owner...we just chuck it!

   Read them, especially if it's a legal document: the more personal, the more interesting! Just kidding, I just put them in the mailbox with "No longer lives here" written on sticky note. In our town, though, they won't deliver mail to us unless the mail matches the last names written in our box. When people get a new last name in their home, you just change it in the mailbox and leave a note to the postman, just noting the new last name so, in the case that he's memorized the last names at your house, he doesn't accidentally throw away the mail.

   If I know the forwarding address, I will indicate it, but if not, I just write "Not At This Address" and put it back in the mailbox.

   I generally put "Return to sender - not known at this address". We still get mail for people who must have lived here over 10 years ago. Some places stop sending letters as a result, others continue sending, sadly there's little you can do about it.
