    Would you travel alone?

I've done it a few times for work.  It's boring.  I'd rather travel with someone.

I have traveled alone twice, but it can get a little boring at times. I still prefer going someone. But still many do travel alone and enjoy it. I guess it's a question of preference. smile

Sure.....because I love my own company.

When travelling for work, I have spent much time in my own company; having dinner alone in some hotel or other restaurant, shopping and sight seeing.
Usually there are ccolleagues that you would sometimes spend time with or do some activities with, but other times you're on your own.  So may as well enjoy the trip.

So, while I have not really travelled to a foreign country and spent the whole vacation alone, I would not mind doing so, for there is always so much to see and do, and often you can strike up a conversation with some other traveller.

My niece travels alone all the time.  She took a trip to sweden for her birthday...alone and had a great time.

I would like to visit New Orleans, and if I had done it alone, I would have visited there a long time ago.  To this day, I have yet to visit there, but I will do it soon and ALONE.

I don't mind travelling alone, but it can be a bit scarey.  One time I got lost in Venice.  Another time a slightly creepy man approached me at a beach in Mexico.

Sure. One just has to use common sense when traveling alone. I have done it before and found it enjoyable, almost like a retreat.

I have and do travel alone. I am male though so I think in someways I am safer.

If you keep your common sense though I don't think travelling alone is too dangerous. Mainly keep in touch with people back home on a regular basis.

Keep to areas where you feel comfortable, if in doubt get out.

Always be cautious of people being too friendly. It may be their nature but don't take a risk.

Well, it depends on where and why. If it was a business trip, I don't see any other options other than traveling alone. If we're talking about a pleasure trip, even a vacation of some sort, I personally wouldn't do it. It'd be a bit too depressing for my taste, traveling without the company of a loved one or a simple friend. I prefer human contact, communication and interaction. But that's just me.

Yes i would travel alone, have done two or three times before not by choice. I enjoy travelling allot, meeting new faces, making new friends in another country is easy to do if you travel alone, because after a while you get bored, end up speaking to someone.

Travel for me means enjoyment and relaxation.

To enjoy, I prefer companion as I can share the enjoyment together with my love. So, traveling for me will be with the company of my wife.

Travel alone will be no fun for me as no one close to share and communicate. I am more to have company and sharing the joy and entertainment with someone I love.

So, I will definitely not travel alone.

Depends on when and where, but I have done so and probably will again.

If I had lived in an earlier era, I would have said yes. But with  the world the way it is, I don't think I would feel safe  travelling alone. Plus, if something happened to me and I was by myself, no one would know for days when I am overdue. By then it is too late. If I am travelling with someone else and something happens to me, my being missing or late will be noticed right away. Mom travelled all over North America when she was young-by herself. She wouldn't feel safe doing that now.

Oh Yeah... Absolutely... I would actually prefer it over traveling with someone. I'm just that kinda guy and have done that far more often than with someone.
Europe North America and Far East are my favorite places for Lone travel.

I have done so in the past, but prefer to travel with someone. The only thing I didn't like was the dining out alone as I felt a bit self-conscious.

I like to travel alone as it gives me independance and freedom-I do not need to rely on a partner or friend to go somewhere.

Most of my friends are now settled down whereas I'm single again and their idea of a holiday is a stark contrast to what I enjoy. Even if I was seeing someone I think i'd consider it to maintain some independance and personal identity

I have found solo traveller holidays to be a great compromise as it brings together a group of single travellers who want to travel within a group and all really want to be there. It makes for such a positive group dynamic that I would recommend it to anyone. Women seem more likely than men to go on such holidays as well which initially I found surprising however women seem to have a more independant streak (from my experience as opposed to men)

Solo travelling can be extremely daunting at first however once you've been a couple of times you get into a routine and become comfortable with it in the right environment.

Definitely! I used to think I wouldn't, but then came my Amsterdam trip. I was meant to meet my friend there (we were flying in from two different places) and we messed up the flight dates, and as a result I had to spend a day and night on my own. I know it's only a day and a night, but I learned a little bit about myself, about exploring a new city in a new country with nothing to go off of. Traveling with a partner in crime is fun, but you'll learn a lot about yourself traveling alone.

Loving all the answers.  I'm single and I'm very fortunate to have so many single friends to travel with.  There's always someone up for a holiday.  However, I'm thinking that it won't be long before they begin to settle down and meet people, and when that happens, I want to still be able to satisfy my desire for travel.

I love travelling and want to see so many places.  Also, enjoy meeting new people from around the world.  Even now, there's times I've considering travelling on my own by choice.

Only thing is that I'm concerned I'll not be as sociable if I don't have the support of friends around.  Eating out, like I've read in some of your replies, is also another aspect I'd be shy about on my own.  However, I am independent and love the freedom that being on my own would bring.  I can do what I want and when I want.  Your replies are an encouragement to just-go-for-it!  Great to hear of so many like-minded people who've been there before.

I think you should only travel alone when you are trying to experience a moment of true freedom, but otherwise, familiar social interactions are a plus, mainly so that you have a second set of eyes and ears for the trip.

I'm contemplating it.  Even when I do travel with people I end up wandering off alone.  When I am currently traveling I feel confident I could  do it .  I was thinking England or Switzerland for my first purely solo adventure.  The people around me don't seem to think it's a good idea which has stopped me until now.  In Europe I met several solo women who loved it and said that they felt safe. I walk around San Fran and Los angeles alone all the time.  Is Zurich any different?
