Ease of public transportation?
I'm moving to Aus in 1.5 weeks; is it better to buy a car, or can I rely on public transit? I'll be living all over Victoria and near the Goldie for 5 months.
Hi,
I don't have much experience with Victorian public transport, but with most areas in Australia as long as you are close to the city or a major town, transport is pretty good. Once you get further out it might have it's limits though.
This site tells you all about public transport availability in Melbourne and VIC: http://www.metlinkmelbourne.com.au/
and this site has information for south east qld which includes the Gold Coast.... http://www.translink.com.au/
Hope you have a great time!!
melbourne has pretty good public transport
I would be aware of buying a ticket though. Make sure you have change when you get on a tram or have bought your ticket before you travel on tram or train - as inspectors are not what I would call an asset to the state.
Make sure you have a ticket for the right zones when travelling too.
Other than that the trams are good, the trains good and buses good too.
Other states systems are run differently, so there is not such an emphasis on the inspectors and thus easier to travel without fuss or upset.
I bought a car because of the inspectors and I do always buy a ticket, they just seem to be to imposing and upset my travel. So having a car was not my choice environmentally, but solved my problems with tram inspectors.

Should there be separate seating for men and women in public transport? Is it a good idea to prohibit one from sitting next or adjacent to opposite gender on public transport? Should there be designated seats for women-only on public transport?
