Have you ever been to the Mohjave Desert?

It looks at though I may be spending part of the summer in the Mohjave Desert as part of a field trip for entomology.  I am wondering if other readers have been and what their experience was like?

Most of my travels have been restricted to the southeast, but trails.com has quite an extensive listing on the area.

You can find info here:  http://www.trails.com/advancedfind.aspx … ctivities=

Hope this helps, and let us know how your trip goes.

I spent many vacation in the Mojave desert as a kid - my dad loved the desert.  It is drier than you can possibly imagine and you will get dehydrated very easily.  The hottest temperature I've ever experienced in Mohave is 116 degrees, but it gets even hotter.  You'll have to be on the lookout for snakes and scorpions - be sure to check your shoes before you put them on just in case something has crawled inside.  There are a lot of interesting historical sites left over from gold mining in the 1800's.  The best time to appreciate the desert is early in the morning at sunrise and at sunset, when the fading sun lights up the night sky.  Hope you enjoy your trip!

Yes, I have, several times....while hauling produce..............

You need to be prepared..............take water, lots of water, if you do not need it, your vehicle just might.

It is a lonely stretch.........make use of your music......or audio.....be it FM  or recorded, learn to use the CB radio.

You can and most probably will get through it unscathed................but be prepared...........water, flashlights, fuel...................

It is world reknown for a reason.................just respect and prepare for  those reasons.

You seem to be a reasonable person, and you will probably have no problems................just be aware of the problems that might occur..............

    TAKE  WATER

If you plan on going during the summer be sure to take care of yourself. Dehydration and heat exhaustion are extremely high dangers in areas like this. If you plan to be out a lot I would suggest buying a "camelback". A lightweight backpack with a water pouch inside usually connected to a drinking tube. These are great. Store sunblock or even your specimens inside it. Keep it refilled at all times. I promise this is a lifesaver.

Another thing, small critters, snakes, spiders, scorpions, etc. If you are tent camping, use a cot elevated off the ground. You don't want ants or any other biting or poisonous animals sleeping with you. Beware of shaded spots like large rocks, bush, or small trees. These are where snakes like to cool off during the heat of the day.

The desert will get hot. Driving through last time I went, we had to turn off our A/C so that our radiator would not overheat. That's just an example of what can happen so be prepared. Some places don't get cellular service and a phone pole should be set up every so many miles. Don't be caught out without a hat and lots of water. Many people succumb to heat sickness here.
