There are many hiking back packs. The better ones have good, stiff, ergonomically correct supports and strap systems. They will save you a tremendous amount of effort and take up relatively little space. They are a must for long distance cycling. Small local canvas shops can make customized versions at reasonable prices.
We are avid North Face buyers. Their product is great, durable, usually water proof, comfortable, and made for carrying for long periods of time. My husband has The North face Terra 65 and it can hold several days of supplies.
It very much depends on the sort of travel that you're going to be doing. If you're going somewhere where you will have to carry your luggage around a great deal then, yes, a backpack is ideal. However, backpacks are not good for two things: keeping your clothes flat and neatly pressed and they're not good for ease of access.
If you are travelling somewhere a bit rough and tumble but won't have to carry your kit much then I suggest a duffel bag - there are some great ones on the market that are water resistant, strong and going up to around 100 litres in size. If, of course, you're gong somewhere where your personal presentation is important then you can't beat the good old-fashioned suitcase for looking after your clothes.
