    Have you heard of the "red tide" in parts of the pacific ocean?

    What causes it and how long does it last?  Is there anything besides the terrible smell and murky water that is bad for you?

    I reader hearing of it when I lived in Washington state. When it occurs, certain shellfish residing in those waters become uneatable. The condition is also called "algae bloom" caused by a rapid accumulation of microoranisms in particular bodies of coatal water. Some of it can be toxic and deprives the aquatic life within it of necessary oxygen. This probably accounts for some of the smell. The bloom is actually begins in a green shade and turns to a rusty brown as a result of the photosythesis giving the water a red effect at the surface and thus the name. WB

    A red tide is a term used by scientists when there is an overgrowth of harmful algae.
