Suburbs south of St. Paul, MN (Apple Valley, Burnsville, Eagan, Rosemount, Farmington, Prior Lake, and Lakeville). Extremely low crime rate compared to the national average. Close enough to the twin cities so that you don't have a long commute to work, yet, the suburbs offer ample job opportunities as well.

It has tons of entertainment (tons of movie theaters, paintball parks, parks, Ski resorts and Valley Fair amusement park is 2 hours away), it also offers great shopping with the Mall of America which is located 5-15 minutes away from Eagan. The weather isn't that bad in regards to winter, you really get used to it.

On top of it Minnesota has some of the best public schools in the country, in fact Eagan High School is one of the top 1000 High Schools in the country (I believe 750).

St. Pauls zip code is 55123, check it out you will love everything about it. If your used to the coast well MN has more than 10,000 lakes so plenty of swimming and "man made beaches".

One thing I would like to contribute is the fact that I have traveled all over the U.S.A. as well as lived. Although I grew up in MN, nothing comes close as far as excellent family life.

Depends, are you looking for a less expensive area, or are you looking for a hip more expensive area?

I live in San Francisco, and the suburbs in the East Bay are fairly responsible pricing.  You are only a short BART(Bay Area Rapid Transit) ride away from San Francisco and there are good areas to raise a family.

If you were looking for something extremely cheap, I would go to Florida or someone where down south.

    Anyway good luck.

I love the cities in my surrounding area.  I live in the San Gabriel Valley in Southern California where a majority of the area is suburban neighborhoods. Arcadia, San Marino, and South Pasadena all boasts excellent schools.  Ranked amongst the top schools in California, it's great for families.  They also have many parks located throughout the city and crime is relatively low.  Within an hours drive, you can access the beach, the mountains. and desert for weekend fun.

I would suggest Bentonville, Arkansas!  I live there part of the year and have found it be to a lovely city with great schools and a lot of diversity.  The crime rate is low, winters are short, there are lots of outdoor activities such as hiking, rock climbing and cycling, boating on Beaver Lake, among others.

I love SF Bay Area VERY MUCH! Lived on Long Island (NY) in the past, didn't like it. SF Bay Area is the best - has great schools, great climate. The only problem - high cost of living, but salaries are also better than in the most other parts of the country + it's developing in spite of the crisis.
