After checking into a hotel in the Sukhumvit Road area, I would first jump on the BTS or skytrain (elevated light rail) and get off by the Chao Phraya River stop which is called Sapan Thaksin.  After walking down to the river side, get into a river taxi and say you want to go to the area around Wat Prakaew (The Presidential Palace and Temple of the Emerald Buddha area).  Besides Wat Prakaew, there are other interesting temples like Wat Arun (Temple of the Morning Dawn) and Wat Po (Temple of the Reclining Buddha).  All of these sights are very interesting and beautiful.  If you want a good view of Bangkok, go to the Baiyoke Building, Bangkok's tallest skyscraper, and visit the revolving restaurant on the top floor.  In the area around Baiyoke which is called Pratunam, there are a number of small shops which sell fairly reasonable clothes intended for export.  In the evening visit one of Bangkok's fine seafood restaurants and then check out the lower Sukhumvit area and Patpong areas for adult entertainment if you are not a family man.  Streetside food is very good and economical.  While in Thailand don't forget to try some somtam (spicy papaya salad) or tumyamgong (spicy shrimp soup.)

Bangkok is the economic center of Thailand and its capital, one of the fast-growing cities of the world and one of the most attractive cities for tourism. The channel system, created by one of Thai kings in the 19th century, hinted the idea for another name to the city - "Eastern Venice." At that time boats were the only means of transport. read more

All of the above, but I would also include a visit to Jim Thomson's house.
