Crete or Peloponnese - which would make the best family holiday?

Which is the nicest? Crete with Knossos and the Samaria Gorge etc, or somewhere like Stoupa or Kalamata, near to the Caves or Dirou? Or somewhere else in Greece entirely?  Also looking for nice beaches and and an atmosphere that has not been ruined by excessive tourism.

I have  never been to either. I have a friend who went to Crete a few months ago, she said the beaches were beautiful, but the city and the people were so poor that it was depressing. She said she probably wouldnt go back.

There's a lot of great spots in Greece.  Have you thought about Croatia?

Yes, sonnyhodgin, in fact, the last two times we went away was to Croatia and it is one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited. However, this time we want to try somewhere different and we have never been to any part of Greece.

I think Crete is a better option, since it's an Island, you can't go wrong, but I've never been to Crete hmm  My father was from Peloponnesos and while I think it's very nice if I had to chose, I'd go to an island.   I went to Kefalonia which is also an island in Greece and I had the BEST time ever and I've been to Greece probably like 14 times in my life. It was beautiful with mountains everywhere surrounded by beautiful, clear water.  Very nice people, but not too many people. Shopping, restaurants by the beach, cute little towns, very clean.  I didn't see a lot of tourism in Kefalonia, I think few tourists go and the rest just go to visit family every summer.

But in Greece, no matter where you go, you will see poor people, because they all pretty much are.  But it is a lovely country, I see it as my second home.

Thank you, EuroNinila - actually, Kefalonia was another place I thought of and indeed it looks absolutely stunning. We like a bit of sightseeing as well -  I see that Kefalonia has caves as well. Did you visit those?

Yes I went to one of the caves, also to the famous church of the island and to the famous beach of the island.  I  liked it a lot, and got to see where a saint used to hide out from the Germans in a hole in the ground under the church.  It was cool.

Crete is beautiful, but peloponiso it so beautiful too.I am from kalamata-peloponisos and the beaches are so clean.
There are not many tourists in peloponisos but the beaches are so great, So i recommend to you to visite the peloponissos. You can visite the epidauros (επιδαυρος), the monevasia  (Μονεβασια),mani(Μανη),Kardamili (καρδαμιλι) of course the killini ( κυλληνη) the most clean beach in Greece in my opionion, and Pylos with the new big hotel  costa navarino ,which now as they say visited brad Pitt and Angelina Joly. You sould know that the roads in pelloponisso are new and kalamata is only 3 hours from Athens with car. And because as i say before there arent many tourists the hotels are cheap and so the food.
