Late night here. Is Lake Tahoe or the surrounding area a good place to live?

I'm not 'professional', in the sense that I'm not an accountant or lawyer or realtor.  What is your assessment of the difficulty (or ease) of living in Tahoe or Truckee?

Living in the Tahoe/Truckee area is spendy as it is in most tourist destinations--and, of course, it SNOWS in the winter so roads do get closed and driving can be dangerous.  On the other hand living in the Reno/Sparks or Carson City areas is quite affordable.  The area was hit hard by the recession and is still recovering, but for quality of life in an urban setting western Nevada doesn't do too bad.  For myself, I prefer northeastern Nevada "where the air is clean and the bars don't close."

The sparks area is very nice.  It can be very suburban with tons of big box stores.  If you get a place on the river it can feel more rustic.  There are some really nice new areas.  It is drier there than near the lake.

The weather can be a little difficult, but that is coming from someone who's lived by the beach her whole life.  I've spent a lot of time up there and have had several friends who have moved to the area.

The snow plows are great at clearing the snow.  If it snows all night and you have to leave the house at 8am, chances are, the road is clean already.  They prep the plows in advance, so they are ready to go.  They are super efficient at plowing the highways and major roads.  At lake level, the snow isn't usually that bad anyways.

Truckee is pretty touchy.  One side of the river has very high crime and is pretty trashy.  There are million dollar homes in the area as well, so just like anywhere, you have to see which neighborhoods are bad.

People tend to be very friendly and helpful.  it's not uncommon to actually talk to the check-out clerk at the grocery store.  It's a lot more chill than many of the cities of California.  Everything is on mountain time, with the mom and pop stores closing early.

There is a huge drug problem.  The West shore has some pretty seedy areas and, according to my friend from south shore, if you live downtown you will have to deal with the drug problem.    If you pick an area with a lot of nice looking cabins or condos, you will be fine.

The area is very seasonally driven.  Any of the areas around the ski resorts attract a very transient group of people who chase the snow every year.  This makes traffic and the area busier in the winter and the summer, but more mellow in the fall and spring.

Jobs are really hard to come by, with many of them being seasonal.  Some of the shops close down for a few months a year.  The economy of the area is very fragile and dependent on tourism, which is dependent on the weather.  I had a friend who tried finding work during a bad ski season and it was hard.  Even if you don't want to work at a resort, when a bad year hits, all of the resort workers flood the local job market.

I've heard from a couple of friends that they had a hard time fitting in.  Some of the locals aren't very inviting and friendly towards newcomers.   Just be friendly, humble, and respectful, and you should be fine.

Mountain living in hard work, but many who have moved up there, never came home.  I think that says something.

Great synopsis of the Tahoe area!  I haven't spent as much time there as you have recently so you've got better info. One thing: Nevada is on Pacific Time-Mountain starts in Utah

Bob, by mountain time I meant a slower pace...it's ok to be late because people understand that the weather disrupts plans.  Like island time, it's a joke.  I hope others didn't take it literally.

Ah! I see!  We have kind of the same thing here. It's called "desert time" or "Elko time."  Really, clocks are for the insecure and the impatient-better to live each moment one at a time and savor every one.

Wow I would never have thought a drug problem in that area.  The west shore of lake tahoe?  Maybe I've got the wrong place in my head but I think I drove up by there last fall and, besides looking gorgeous, seemed quiet.
