   What sort of bicycle should I buy?
   
   I want to use it to travel around my area, by road.  I'm in total confusion about the huge choice of bikes out there...

   one that is suitable for your size, it's important that your feet can touch the ground whilst you sitting on the saddle with feet off the pedals.

   I'm biased but I say a recumbent! Don't buy the toys at Walmart. They are complete useless total junk. If paying $345 for a bike then spend the extra $100 and get what I got from globalbikes.com in Pheonix:

   For me, select the best in quality and not so expensive. It is important also that you are comfortable with your bike.

   It depends on specifically how you want to use the bike.  I review several types of bikes on my blog: http://www.cyclingforbeginners.com
   
   If it is mainly for transportation, errands, etc., around town, I like the Electra Townie 7D.
   
   If you want to go faster and longer -- group road rides, races, etc., the Giant Defy 3 and the Fuji Newest 3.0 are both really good values.
   
   If you want a fast bike with lots of gears, but not the bent over position of a traditional road bike, I'd look at a flat bar road bike like the Cannondale Quick 4.

   A bicycle which can be "folded" to save space and to be able to hold and carry it around!That is light and portable!

   My girlfriend just bought this bike from Walmart about a month ago and it's excellent for the price.  All she does is ride around her college campus and the surrounding town (all on roads) and it's not only held up great, but I checked it out in the store and it's assembled quite well, better than I thought Walmart would provide.  http://www.walmart.com/ip/26-L-Cranbroo … n/12509650
