Villa Renting in the Caribbean

The Caribbean Villa

Whether you have a large family or it's just a romantic trip for two, spending your vacation on St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands can be a wonderful experience. As one of the most beautiful of the three islands that make up the U.S. Virgin Islands, St. John is the only one that you cannot fly directly into. Both St. Croix and St. Thomas have direct flights to them. To arrive at St. John you must first fly into St. Thomas and then take the twenty minute ferry ride over to this beautiful paradise.

What You Need to Know Before Renting

Before booking a rental villa (all homes on the islands are referred to as villas) the first thing you should do is make yourself familiar with the island. A map of the island will allow you to get familiar with it and decide what area you'd like to spend your holiday on. You may find that staying close to CruzBay, the biggest town and where the ferry from St. Thomas drops you off is important to you. Then again, you may find that you'd rather be closer to the gorgeous beaches of the NorthShore such as Hawksnest, CinnamonBay and the famous Trunk Bay. If peace and quiet is your desire, you could spend your vacation in a villa on the backside of the island near the seclusion of Coral Bay.

Timing is Everything in the Caribbean

As in most vacation spots, there is high season and low season. For the Caribbean the high season is in the winter months. Many "snowbirds" from the United States travel south for the warm weather during the winter. The deals to be made are those willing to travel during the summer when rates are lower. All villa rental websites will quote you a high season or “in season” rate and a low season or “out of season” rate. Many times that “out of season” rate is much lower than the “in season” rate.

Rent from a Local Villa Agency

Once you have narrowed down how many people are vacationing, and at what time of year, your search begins. You will find various sites that offer you many choices when it comes to villa rental companies. Best advice is to make sure that the rental company is located on the island of St. John. If you find a problem with your villa when arriving, a local manager will be much more responsive than one that requires a long distance phone call.

Don’t Forget the Wheels

For those who have not traveled to St. John before, you should know that in addition to renting a villa you will need a four wheel vehicle as well. The island has many agencies to choose from and most villa rental management companies can help you find one. Also you will find that since the island of St. John at one time was a Dutch territory, therefore everyone drives on the left hand side of the road. With a very low crime rate and year round great weather on top of some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, the island of St. John is a beautiful destination for vacationing.
