Hi, I'm Mark Swain, I am 54, married with three grown-up children. I'm English but I've spent much of my life living abroad. Mainly in Singapore, Malaysia, Germany, France, Spain and Japan. I have always led a rather nomadic life. It's probably why I have a low boredom threshold and why I had dozens of jobs (and careers) before finally setting up a successful Management Consultancy company 15yrs ago. In 2008 I cycled with my son from Ireland to Japan. That was his idea when he was 10. In order to achieve this I had to put my business in the hands of a new employee. I expected to come back (after 10 months) and find the company on its knees or him gone. Instead I found he'd increased business by 45%. He did such a great job I made him a partner and he now runs the company. It's a great success story and one that has left both him and I happy to be doing what we enjoy; him running the business and me cycling, writing, surfing and making sculpture. In 2012 I had my first book published: Long Road, Hard Lessons. It is about the cycle expedition but just as much about parent-teenager relationships and achieving work-life balance. I'm a happy man who recognises that my happiness is only possible due to the help of my wife, children, business partner and good friends. This squidoo 'lens' has been developed in an effort to return their kindness by trying to do some good for other fathers and sons. Let's face it guys, most of us need it!
