He is also the developer of the BESS (Brubacher Edge Sharpness Scale) and is a founder and an honorary board member of BESSU, an international non-profit dedicated to the education and implementation of the BESS world-wide. BESS is the first universal and quantifiable scale for expressing the sharpness of an edge and its use is free.
Mr. Brubacher is also credited with discovering the potential risk of food contamination by metal edges sharpened by common and conventional sharpening means. His company, Edge On Up, has developed techniques and tools to mitigate and/or eliminate this risk.
