10 Benefits of Owning a Pet

There is no Love Like Animal Love

These two are my Ying and Yang, but we call them Olive and Oliver. They love each other dearly. They eat together, sleep together, and play together, but only when they're not hanging out together. Ha Ha

Having a Pet can Change Your Life

Animals are God’s gift to us for many reasons. Nowhere can you find the kind of love and admiration you get from your adorable pet. Just as there are people of all kinds with interests of all types, there are animals with different qualities and interests. Each furry soul has an individual personality, just like humans do. Before adopting a pet, be sure your personality matches the potential new family member. For example, if you’re considering adopting a Pot Bellied Piglet, be sure you research the cost and care before you go get one. This type of animal may not actually be your ideal pet. Or, if you get annoyed easily by unnecessary noise, a bird might not be for you. Just do your homework on the animal so as not to waste time, money, and most importantly, having to displace the animal again. Having a pet can be hard work. You must invest your time and energy to ensure the animal has the best quality of life possible. Your pet is not a possession; he or she is part of the family.

10 Examples of a Pet’s Contribution

  • The first thing you are guaranteed when you own a pet is laughter and joy. They have an uncanny way of doing the silliest things that will have you throwing your head back and roaring at how adorable they look. Even if you’ve had a bad day, you will most likely get a giggle in at least once during that terrible time. You know what they say, “Laughter is the best medicine”.
  • Secondly, having a soft, warm, furry friend to stroke has been proven to relieve stress. It has medical benefits, both physically and emotionally, especially for the elderly. Having a furry family member gives purpose and cause for longevity. After all, you can’t possibly give up on life when you have someone who loves you so much that depends on you for its own quality of life, can you?
  • Thirdly, for those who are unable to have children, or their children have left home, the natural instinct to nurture someone is stifled. Having a pet gives you the opportunity to take care of someone you love and feel as though you are deeply needed.
  • Fourth on the list shows you that you are guaranteed unconditional love and affection. You may not have even obtained these benefits from your parents or spouse, but your pet will gladly snuggle with you, show you how important you are to them, and prove to you that you are his or her best friend. Your pet doesn’t care what you look like, how you smell, how much you weigh, or if you’ve brushed your teeth. They will give you snuggles and kisses no matter what.
  • The fifth benefit to owning a pet is that you always have someone to talk to. My daughter depended on her pet snake for venting sessions when she was in college and away from home. He always listened and never judged. Having someone there when you get home curbs any potential loneliness you may feel.

Cats are Smart Too!

  • Sixth on the list of benefits includes the joy your children will have playing with their pets. They will have incredible memories, learn how to care for living things gently, and understand unconditional love. You will also have a sense of security knowing your pet will alert you if faced with danger, and protect your child if you own a dog.
  • Entertainment is the seventh reason to own an animal. Most pets are easily trained to do spectacular tricks, and might even shock you. Just because they don’t speak English doesn’t mean your pets can’t understand you. They have their own way of communicating and once you figure it out, you will be thoroughly impressed with how smart they are.
  • The eighth reason to adopt a pet is because you will be contributing to a society that is over populated with unwanted animals. If you rescue a pet you have saved a pet. Animals are such special creatures and the thought of the number of them being euthanized each year is heart breaking. You would be saving the life of a creature with its own personality who just wants to love you and make you happy.
  • Number nine on the benefits list includes physical interaction. Physical exercise like dog walking, playing with a cat, or riding a horse is good for both you and the animal. Not only do you all benefit from the physical activity, but you all benefit from the quality time spent together. You also make wonderful memories you will have to reflect on for the rest of your life.
  • Lastly, the rewards outweigh the burdens like vet bills and food costs. Owning a pet isn’t free, but it can be inexpensive depending on the pet you choose. If you can afford to spend more on a larger pet, it is still definitely worth the money. You can’t put a price on the previously mention benefits when you are a loving pet owner.

Thank you for commenting, teaches! There was a period of about 3 years in my entire life where I didn't have a pet. I admit, I enjoyed not having the responsibility, but had a sense of loneliness during that time.

I don't own a pet at the moment, but I have had my fair share in the past. They do make your life enjoyable. I used to love watching my cat play, sit, or just sleep. They are so smart! I love your opening photo, the heart shape is so touching.
