THE EAGLE LEADERSHIP PHILOSHOPHY- 6 Positive Leadership Traits of Eagle Man Should Learn From

Updated on March 14, 2017
An eagle waiting
An eagle waiting

For centuries, these seemingly larger-than-life birds have fascinated and inspired us with brilliant leadership characteristics. When eagles come to mind, people commonly imagine some enormous hunter soaring above wide-open spaces on outsized wings. Indeed, eagles are among the world’s largest birds of prey. We venerate them as living symbols of power, freedom, and transcendence. In some religions, high-soaring eagles are believed to touch the face of God. Legend holds that Mexico’s Aztecs so revered the birds that they built Tenochtitlan, their capital, at the spot where an eagle perched on a cactus.

Man for many years have taken Eagles are a symbol of beauty, bravery, courage, honour, pride, determination and grace. What makes this bird so important and symbolic to humanity are its characteristics. Seven important characteristics of eagle has been closely associated to leadership and is widely researched and the facts accepted globally.

Lord of the Air -Eagle video

"If art is to nourish the roots of our culture, society must set the artist free to follow his vision wherever it takes him"

~John F. Kennedy

The 6 Characteristics

Positive Trait # 1: Eagle Have Fine Vision

If you ever happen to see an eagle sitting high above the tree or cliff of a stiff mountain, watch closely and see how attentive the bird is. The body will be still and the head tilted side to side to observed what is happening below, around and above it. Even if its flying close by, you can observe how keen its eyes are, looking for its prey. Eagles have a keen vision. Their eyes are specially designed for long distance focus and clarity. They can spot another eagle soaring from 50 miles away.

Does this characteristic ring a bell in your mind? I am sure it does. Look at great leaders of this world who have come and gone. There are many great leaders that came and went but one characteristic that is common in all is "Vision". Vision is a successful leadership characteristic

"All successful people men and women are big dreamers. They imagine what their future could be, ideal in every respect, and then they work every day toward their distant vision, that goal or purpose"

~Brian Tracy

Take for Abraham Lincoln for example. Abraham, Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States, guided his country through the most devastating experience in its national history, the Civil War. He had a vision, to save the union and free the slaves. He is considered by many historians to have been the greatest American president.

You must have a vision that guides and leads your team towards the organization's or societal goals. The vision must be big and focused. A big, focused vision will produce big results.

Positive Trait # 2: Eagles are Fearless

An eagle will never surrender to the size or strength of its prey. It will always give a fight to win its prey or regain its territory.

Go over and watch the video on how the Golden Eagle displays remarkable hunting strategy, preying on goats much larger than itself by throwing them off the cliff face.

No matter what the size of that person or what weapon they maybe holding, you would attack them without thought or regard for yourself. It wouldn’t even dawn on you to be afraid because your instinct is to protect that which you love and cherish.

Successful leaders are fearless. They face problems heard on.

Are Tenacious

Positive Trait # 3. Eagles are Tenacious

Watch an eagle when a storm comes. When other birds fly away from the storm with fear, an eagle spreads its mighty wings and uses the current to soar to greater heights. The eagle takes advantage of the very storm that lesser birds fear and head for cover.

Challenges in the life of a leader are many. These are the storm we must face as leaders to rise to greater heights. Like an eagle, a leader can only rise to greater heights if he takes up the challenges head on without running away from it. Yet, another leadership characteristics

An eagle soaring high
An eagle soaring high

Positive Trait # 4. Eagles are High Flyers

Eagles can fly up to an altitude of 10,000 feet, but they are able to swiftly land on the ground. At 10, 000 feet, you will never find another bird. If you find another bird, it has to be an eagle according to Dr, Myles Munroe.

An eagle doesn't mingle around with the pigeons. It is Dr. Myles Munroe who said that. Pigeons scavenge on the ground and grumble and complain all day long. Eagles are not. They fly and and make less noise waiting for opportunties to strike their next prey or glide with the current of the storm.

Great leaders are problem solvers. They don't complain like the pigeons do. They love to take challenges as the eagle does when the storm comes.

Positive Trait # 5. Eagles possess Vitality

Eagles are full of life and visionary but hey have they find time to look back at their life and re-energies themselves. This happens at about the age of 30. What happens is that when the eagles reach the age of 30, their physical body condition deteriorates fast making it difficult for them to survive.

What is really interesting is that the eagle never gives up leaving. instead he eagle retreats to a mountaintop and over a five month period goes through a metamorphosis. It knocks off its own beak by banging it against a rock, plucks out its talons and then feathers. Each stage produces a regrowth of the removed body parts, allowing the eagle to live for another 30 - 40 years.

There are times in your life as a leader that you must look back and take stock of your life. The good and the bad experiences you have been through as a leader. Are you keeping in trend with the current knowledge trend? Do you need to improve your certain areas in your life as a leader?

Great leaders are the ones that always do "check and balance"of their personal and professional lives and make an effort to learn things every day.

Positive Trait # 6. Eagles Nurture Their Younger Ones

Believe this or not. Eagles are know for their aggression. They are absolutely ferocious aren't they? Any one who doesn't have a total knowledge of this great bird will say yes. What is more astonishing with this bird is their ability to nurture their young ones. Research has shown that no member of the bird family is more gentle and attentive to its young ones than the eagles.

This is how it happnens. When the mother eagle sees that time has come for it to teach the eaglets to fly, she gathers an eaglet onto her back, and spreading her wings, flies high. Suddenly she swoops out from under the eaglet and allows it to fall. As it falls, it gradually learns what its wings are for until the mother catches it once again. The process is repeated. If the young is slow to learn or cowardly, she returns it to the nest, and begins to tear it apart, until there is nothing left for the eaglet to cling to. Then she nudges him off the cliff.

True leaders are not bosses. They grow with their people. They strive to make individuals in the organization or society grow to their full ability. They teach and guide just like the mother eagle does. They never stop giving challenges but never give-up empowering and directing.

The five leadership Characteristics summed up in the Scriptures in Isaiah 40: 31 while character number 3 and 6 is summed up in Psalm 103:5 and character number 8 I want to add is Eagles are Fast. They are very fast. They move fast before any obstales comes. They attack their prey fast. Jeremiah 4:13; 48:40 and even Character number 1 to 6 are in Jeremiah 48:40. Character number 7 is summed up in Deuteronomy 32:11.

Hey! Great information about the eagle!!! I was doing a Google search on eagles and your page was listed as the 1st source based on my search. Anyway, today in church, my minister advised us to be more like the eagle regarding their leadership style. In correlation with the eagle facts you posted, the minister also said that eagles do not fly in groups. Thanks for sharing! I'll NEVER see the eagle the same again!

Out of ignorance the disciples interjected Jesus with a question, "where Lord", Jesus said, ' where the corpse is there the eagles will gather.' Jesus was explaining His coming i.e. two men will be sleeping ,one taken the other left behind. Two women grinding one taken, the other left behind. Profound, signs of the last days. Come to think about it only vultures do that, however, in Luke 17:37 it says Eagle, a characteristic that we still need to find out. Definitely the passage did not mention anything about the eagles eating the body, just the eagles will gather. I believe that the Body referred to belongs to Christ from mortal to immortality from corrupt to incorruptible and where he is, we His saints (eagles) will gather.

Only the creator of these majestic birds can give us another insight and character of the Eagle. Any way thanks for your application very interesting. I need to learn more about this bird of prey.

      From Fiji with Love. Amen.

      Hi Ian,

It takes creative writings to trigger unusual transformation in our generation. Your inspirational write up on this subject of the eagle is highly educative, and at the same time greatly challengeable. I think, in order for us as leaders not to be a liability, we imperatively have to undertake a rigorous responsibility just like that of eagles. We must also know that eagles are not made out of "theory" but "practise". It takes an eagle to be made while an eaglect to be birthed. As leaders we need to emulate this practical teaching. Thanks so much brother Ian for taking time to simplify on this topic.

I also learnt that if a female eagle will have her first sex, she will test for commitment. She will take the make eagle to very high height of any kind with a food or stick in her beak, she releases the stuff in her mouth downwards and if the male eagle cannot catch it be for it touches the ground, NO SEX.

      Could this article be true.

Eagles are also carnivorous scavengers. That's their mode of operation. Being fast, agile and tenacious doesn't make a good leader, just good predator. If you want a leader (or to be a leader) who is a carnivorous scavenger and likes to rip people off for own profit instead of building relations and cooperating with everyone for the common good, then you have a very twisted idea of what leadership is about.

Thanks so much Ian for the Hub pages. Thanks so much for all others that have commented. Indeed, I have learnt a great deal of knowledge about eagles.

One thing that I want to share with others is, study the simple law of nature and change your life and the surroundings. God created the natural and physical world and placed everything first, then created man. Man can learn form them. The physical/natural reveals the spiritual. That's is why I would say: my God how great are Your works (Psalms 92: 5 )

Thanks Lan, this is inspiring. Even God appreciate the qualities in the Eagle. He (God) reminded the Isrealites how He bore them on EAGLE'S wing all through then wilderness. He also promised that those who wait upon Him will renew their strength and mount up with wings like EAGLE. This bird is outstanding, please continue the good job

Wonderful animal. Good to emulate in life. That is why for my school the motto is Swerve, Spiral and Soar. This is explained to the pupils in the context of the eagle life. It encourages the children. The school anthem has similar message.

I understand that when it's time to die, the eagle positions itself so that it faces the sun and dies with the light in its eyes. If this is true then this leader is positive/optimistic to the very end

      Truly inspiring.
