About Golden Retriever Puppy Dog Breed

Updated on May 25, 2013

Golden retriever is a medium sized dog breed. It is called retriever because of it's ability to retrieve game undamaged. These dogs love water a lot & enjoy playing in it, unlike some other dogs. When they grow big, their inner coat fur helps them to stay warm in winters. These dogs love to roam a lot & also can be used as a hunting dog, if trained to do so. So, they should be kept fenced & should be taken on a walk with safety only.

Some Important Highlights-

This Dog breed sheds a lot of hair in spring season. So you need to keep care of your clothing & house also during that period. But if you want to pet this dog, you have to get used to this dog’s hair.
This dog breed are considered very friendly & love sharing family dogs & they love to be in your house spending time with you. Not outdoors sitting dull & alone. This can affect their health also.
You need to give your dog timely exercises, both mental & physical. You need to give them skills training, take them for a walk, teach them to control their biting activities (Use the link at last of this hub to learn Steps of Dog Training) etc. Training of 40 minutes-1 hour everyday would be sufficient.
I know that these dogs are very loving & also very rarely attack someone but these large dogs can accidentally attack a toddler. So you need to be careful with that.
Golden Retriever loves to eat a lot of tasty stuff. But you need to make sure that they get a controlled & healthy diet. Feeding too much can make them overweight. List of the healthy foods to serve them have been listed in other hub of mine whose link is given at the end.
Seeing the popularity of this breed, many people tend to use this dog as a money making machine. Seeing the high demand & value of these puppies many people try breeding there dogs. But remember, to get a healthy dog, never buy a puppy from an irresponsible breeder, puppy mill, or pet store. Look for a reputable breeder who tests her breeding dogs to make sure they're free of genetic diseases that they might pass onto the puppies, and that they have sound temperaments.

Diseases which Golden Retriever may possibly have-

Possible diseases
Hip Dysplasia
This is a very harmful disease where the thighbone doesn’t works properly. There is some pain in hip joint. Some of the dogs even tend to show signs of pain & weakness on their legs, but the owner’s may not be able to detect this harmful disease. So you need to ensure timely checkups of your dog. (Atleast once a month). As the Golden Retriever becomes older, the problem of arthritis develops. Dogs facing hip dysplasia should not be breed. In case you are planning to buy a puppy of this breed, do ensure that the dog is free from all such problems. A very important detail for Goldens owner’s is that X-ray screening for hip dysplasia is done by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals or the University of Pennsylvania Hip Improvement Program.
Elbow Dysplasi
This is a heritable condition common to large-breed dogs. It's thought to be caused by different growth rates of the three bones that make up the dog's elbow, causing joint laxity. This can lead to painful lameness. Your vet may recommend surgery to correct the problem or medication to control the pain.
Subvalvular Aortic Stenosis
This heart problem is caused by a narrow connection between the left ventricle (out-flow) and the aorta. It can cause fainting and even sudden death. Your vet can detect it and prescribe the proper treatment.
Golden Retrievers can be allergic to a variety of substances, ranging from food to pollen. If your Golden is licking his paws or rubbing his face a great deal, have him checked by your vet.
This is a disorder of the thyroid gland that's thought to cause conditions such as epilepsy, hair loss, obesity, lethargy, dark patches on the skin, and other skin conditions. It's treated with medication and diet.

I have always thought the Golden Retrievers are such beautiful dogs! I have always loved them, but have never owned one. They are number 1 on the temperament scale for being the least aggresive dogs. I understand they are extremely loveable dogs. Great hub and I love the picture of the puppies, makes me want to go out and get one! Voting this up, useful and interesting. :)

Let me just say that I have had the pleasure of being "buddies" with many of my pets and they ranged in a variety of breeds. The most love-able and easy-going disposition was through this breed. Such a wonderful yet boisterous dog. The Golden Retriever is one of my all-time favorites.

      Great article.
