Amazing new breed of dog or a Hoax? That is what many are asking about China's newest popular pet.

Tiger striped cutie

Are China's popular pooches the real thing?

An incredibly adorable 'breed' of dog is stirring up big controversy. Tiger striped puppies are showing up all across China for sale.

Are these puppies genetically engineered or puppies with very impressive dye jobs?

Supporters say the breed is genetically engineered and has been around for well over two years.
One buyer says that they have washed their puppy several times and no fading occurred and that as the puppy grows the stripes are not diminishing.

Some say that the puppies are air brushed with vegetable dies and that several dogs have been painted to resemble panda bears.

As the debate of the legitimacy of these dogs rages on there is one thing that is not in question they are cute as the dickens!

We have one. She's 100% genetically that way. I'm a science teacher and I've examined her very very carefully. 2 months old now, and still has her stripes, but not quite as striped as the dogs above. I'm waiting to see if they "grow out of their stripes" as I think the blacker ones do, but ours is mostly brown with black stripes and seems to be keeping them. And yes, I'm in China by the way and I've only seen 3 of these puppies (one litter of pups, one friend has a puppy, and one other loan pup). I've not yet seen adult dogs with stripes however.

Update: Our dog lost all her stripes. I still think it was genetic, but now we know why you don't see any adult dogs like this. If they were faked, it would be easier to do adult dogs than small puppies. Too bad.
