Animal Rights Fanatics...Or Good Stewards: What Are We For Standing Up For Basic Animal Rights
I recently answered this question;""Does it seem that people trying to fight animal cruelty lack humanity towards people?""
Now, I have heard this or other variations of it many times. That sticking up for animals is somehow putting them before humans. Personally, I do not see it. I believe protecting animals IS protecting humans. On many levels. I am of the mindset that if you have a large group, if you protect and keep healthy safe, strong and happy, everyone in that group, then obviously the group as a whole will be strong, healthy, safe and happy. That means starting with the weakest and most defenseless in the group. In our case, the group is the world. The weakest and most defenseless are the animals, then our children and elderly and disabled. If the strong do not defend the weak...who will?
Then there is the fact that some of humanities worst criminals started out by abusing animals. This tells me if we ignore this epidemic, and believe me it is a growing epidemic, of animal abusers, we are looking at some major crimes against humanity in the near future. It is imperative that laws are put in place to deal with such people, and to do it in a manner fitting their crime, not just a slap on the wrist. We are called Animal Rights Fanatics, yet what we are doing is also protecting humanity.
I am seriously beginning to dislike the word "Human Rights"...I feel it would be more appropriate to call them, "All Living Beings Rights". For are not the basic human rights of being able to live without abuse, without fear, with food, shelter and love...are these not rights ALL living beings deserve?
I know of at least one person who believes animals do not have the same rights as humans. And I am sure that opinion is felt by many. I ask, does an animal not feel fear or pain or love or loyalty? How does it so differ from us that it should be bereft of the same basic rights as we enjoy? Because an animal does not speak our language? Does that make them stupid? Consider this...Animals understand our language, yet after all these thousands of years of contact with and close association with animals, we have yet to understand theirs. Now who are the stupid ones? Man seems hell bent on destroying each other. That makes them pretty stupid in my book. the love of animals is pure and without condition. The love of man is shallow and given and taken on a whim. The loyalty of animals is given til death. The loyalty of humans comes and goes with the wind. Why are humans so much more deserving of these so called rights than animals?
Call me an Animal Rights Fanatic. If it means protecting helpless, defenseless animals, I wear the label proudly.
I could have posted many images and videos to go with this hub...but in all honesty I cannot bear looking at them.
