Cat Scratchers

Updated on January 14, 2012

Cat scratching posts

Providing something for your cat to scratch on is important. Cats scratch for a variety of reasons and their purpose is not to set out to destroy your furniture no matter what you may think.

Scratching is an instinct of cats. it serves two purposes. One is to sharpen and strengthen their nails and the other is to mark their territory.

Cat scratching posts come in a variety of styles with different sizes. When shopping for a scratching post you will want to take into consideration the size of your cat and whether you have a kitten. A kitten will not be able to use a scratcher that is relatively tall. She will need something shorter in height.

Cat scratchers are mainly made from three types of materials. The most common that a scratching post is made from is carpeting. There is also ones made from corrugated cardboard. These though are cheapest and not very sturdy either. The most durable type of post would be sisal. These are made of a strong rope like material.
