Different Types of Koi Fish

There are many interesting hobbies that a person can pursue nowadays and one of them is breeding koi fish.

Originally, koi fish come from eastern Asia like China and Japan. Although carp was just an ordinary fish that was used even as fish food, the koi fish was a result of complicated breeding took the world by a storm.

Presently, hobbyists from different countries are continuously breeding different types of koi fish which never fails to mesmerize the owners. The sight of beautiful koi swimming in calm water as well as the sparkling colorful scales are enough to relieve the body from stress.

Knowing more about the different types of koi fish can further guide you when choosing any of these amazing breed of fish. Usually, classifying types of koi fish are made according to pattern, scalation and coloration. The more unique the color combination, the mroe costly it gets. It takes thousands of koi fishes until a good design and pattern comes out.

The following list on the different types of koi fish can serve as a guide:

  • Doitsu – this is the most unique among the different types of koi fish for it has no scales. This results from crossbreeding Nishikigoi and some breed of German mirrored carp.
  • Gosanke – this category includes some types of  koi fish such as Kohaku, Taisho Sanshoku and Showa Sansoku. The fishes are classified mainly by their colors. A sub classification describes the colors of each type.
  • Kohaku is usually a white and red striped fish.
  • Showa Sanshoku is a black fish with red and white design - Taisho Sanshoku is a white fish with red and black design.
  • Bekko can either be white, yellow or red fish that has a black design.
  • KinGinRin is a fish with glossy scales.
  • Shusui is similar to an Asagi but has fewer scales -Utsurimono is a black fish that has either yellow,red and white design.
  • Ogon is a koi fish that has all the colors in its body.

On top of the list, there are hundred types of koi fish being bred today. Traditionally, there are fourteen breeds categorized  that creates different types of koi fish. Remember, the breed and colors determine the price of koi which can fetch as much as thousands of dollars.
