Dog Care & Grooming

Updated on November 12, 2015

As dog owners we take our furry friends everywhere with us; the shops, the park, long walks and even on family holidays. In addition, we care for them as much as we care for ourselves and keep them well-groomed to ensure they remain clean, healthy and happy.

If you’re based in, or close by to the North Wales area then Hafod-Y-Bryn are a great choice for pet grooming services. They have boarding kennels and cattery and have been caring for the animals since 1982, but have recently introduced their pet grooming studio.

What do dogs love more than a day of play time and making new friends, getting dirty, having a luxurious pamper session and then best of all, getting to see their owners return to take them home? Nothing. Hafod-y-Bryn ensure all animals are comfortable, having fun and are getting the best possible treatment around.

What makes a healthy dog?

Diet
A dog needs high quality and well balanced dog food and treats. As this is their main source of nutrition, you can check the quality of dog food by checking the first five ingredients on the list of ingredients. These should consist of meat and vegetables, if not then you may want to look into different kinds of dog-food.

Weight
If a dog weighs 10-20% more than his ideal body weight then they can be considered obese. Being obese can shorten a dog’s life by around 2 years, as they are in this case at higher risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, osteoarthiritis, and urinary bladder stones. If you talk the vet to determine your dog’s ideal weight, you can adjust the diet and exercise regime to ensure the greatest results.

Grooming
A dog’s coat needs to be shiny and healthy. This will encourage a good circulation and provide a chance to look over the dog’s skin for any abnormalities such as scabs, redness, irritation or bumps, any of these could be a cause to take a trip to the veterinarians.

Ears
There should not be any smell nor discharge. Usually the innerpart of the ear should be a whitish colour , some dark coloured dogs may have dark coloured inner ears. If you flip over the the ear to inspect it, it should be free from any dirt, debre or parasistes (such as mites or ticks). Sometimes foliage material can find its way into the inner ear after a session rummanging through greenery, these should be removed with care. If your dog has a floppy ear type you should be checking them daily.

Socialising
As long as your dog has the necessary vaccinations, your dog will be happier socialising with other dogs and people. If your dog is found in situations outside the immediate home environment then it will become more confident and happier. This has a more positive effect on the dog when they are young.

Dental Hygiene

Does your dog's breath smell? Are its teeth clean? There are a number of techniques you can use to keep your furry friend's teeth in tip-top condition, these include providing bones and chews which will naturally clean your dog's mouse while it gnaws upon it. Chewing meat off the bone is the ideal way to achieve this, rather than risking the dog damaging its teeth. Using a chew which is VOHC approved, or alternatively Pig's Ears are ideal mouth-cleaning dog chews. A dog with a clean and healthy set of teeth and gums has an increased chance of avoiding any nasty illnesses. This all contributes towards a happy and healthy life, full of walks, playing and cuddles!

Luxury Dog Grooming Studio

Hafod-Y-Bryn’s studio is a member of the British Dog grooming Association. It has been designed to offer a whole range of services for dog boarders and day visitors, all of which are completed by a fully qualified team of dog grooming professionals. Grooming and creative designs are provided to suit all breeds and include scissoring, clipping and hand stripping and this all takes place within a relaxed and informal environment to ensure dogs feel safe and are comfortable.

The studio is purpose built to accommodate all quality grooming equipment and to be suitable and comfortable for all dogs; breed and size. Hygiene is a top priority and the studio is a safe physical environment, as well as hygienic to ensure your dog is in safe hands. All dogs are given full attention from staff members, which is why only one dog is groomed at a time.

Fun & Relaxing Doggie Pamper Days

We all like a couple hours here and there to relax and even the odd pamper session, but why not provide our dogs with that luxury? Doggie Pamper Days are designed to provide your pet with a day of non-stop fun and relaxation, with everything your dog could possibly want. They are bathed, groomed and pampered after enjoying a whole day of play time and ‘walkies’.

All you need to do is drop them off between 8:30am and 10:30am, then return to collect them between 5:00pm and 6:00pm. This gives them an entire day of pure relaxation and fun. The best part, this is all whilst you’re getting on with your daily errands and work, without the worry of what mischief they may be getting up to back home.
