Updated on July 15, 2011

Fast Eating Dogs

A dog that eats too fast is at risk of damaging it's health. There are many reasons why dogs rush when eating and there are many slow down dog bowls available. Brake Fast slow down dog bowls are the one my dogs use and the ones I would highly recommend. If your dog eats too fast and you want to slow his eating down then buy a Brake Fast dog food bowl.

Brake Fast are an award winning dog food bowl company based in Virginia, they started out designing dog food bowls to stop their own dogs eating too fast, the design was so effective it soon turned in to a successful business.

In this article we will explore reasons dogs eat too fast, health risks too fast eating dogs and the Brake Fast dog food bowl range.

Why Dogs Eat Fast

There are many reasons your dog will eat his food fast, most are learned behaviors that can be changed.

I own Labradors, they are very greedy dogs, they will eat until they burst if you let them. This does not mean that they are unable to learn too slow down when eating their food. Greed is one reason a dog will rush his food.

Puppies in a litter are often fed together, they are left to fight over the food, eating fast is a prerequisite to survival in the litter. Back when dogs were wolves in the wild; eating fast was the only way to guarantee you would eat that day, so again learned behavior.

If a dog is in your home and recognises you are the alpha male, the dominant one; he will often eat to fast for fear of you removing his food, the good news is that as these are all learned canine behaviors they can be undone with the help of a slow down dog food bowl.

Health Risk Too Fast Eating Dog

Like humans dogs take nutrition from food. A dog that is eating his food to fast is at risk of nutrition deprivation. In order to get the most from dog food he needs to be able too digest the food, swallowing food without chewing makes this much more difficult.

Fast eating dogs also run the risk of developing Gastric Dilation/Volvulus or Bloat as it is more commonly known, this is a very serious condition and can be fatal.

Bloat is a condition that is characterised by air in the wrong part of the stomach causing it to distend. This can mean the dogs stomach twists causing the dog to go into shock and can lead to death.

Auto Dog Food Feeders for Fast Eating Dogs

Automatic dog food bowls or auto dog feeders as they are more commonly known are an effective way of slowing down a fast eating dog.

They are more expensive but can be used when you are not at home, they come in a range of styles and prices and offer the following benefits:

  • Control fast eating dogs
  • Dispense small amounts of food
  • Hygienic
  • Vet tested
  • Dispense dog food on a timer
