- Banned in Boston, or potentially so according to an official of the Mass. Cage Bird Association; would be all parrot shows, marts, fairs or home exhibits and meetings if Massachusetts S490 passes. The apparently animal rights driven bill would curtail the exhibition of animals outside of permanent facilities such as zoos.Specifically mentioned are ratite birds (defined as mostly flightless birds including ostriches, kiwis, rheas and emus) but a "not limited to" phrase is also in the bill. Similar bills, sb 1898 and hb418. The hearing was on May 2. Interested parties should write to their state legislators, as written comments will be considered before the final vote is taken on May 16. - From Mass. Cage Bird Society and http://usark.org/2017-action-alerts/action-alert-ma-s490/.

- Heard Through the Grapevine that the celebrated Alex the African grey may be the subject of a new TV documentary. Alex arguably demonstrated that parrots can not only mimic human speech but can to a degree understand much of it. Arlene Levine, assistant to Alex trainer Dr. Irene Pepperberg; was recently in Boston to for the filming. The name of the program and network are being kept hush-hush, but think British equivalent of "Varmint Universe".

- Mr. Plumber, You Can Keep the Phone: "Friends don't panic it's me sending out friend requests. I have posted on both walls that Pearl [the cockatoo] tossed my phone in the toilet and I couldn't remember my email pass code or my fb password " - Facebook post.

- Beaking and Entering: A Sydney, Australia woman was victimized a number of times by someone sneaking into her house and stealing snacks. The culprit, finally nabbed, turned out to be a wild cockatoo. - From the "Daily Telegraph" (Australia)

- There's Gold in Them Parakeets: Federal officials have apparently missed a legal deadline required by the Endangered Species Act. Pacific Legal Foundation notified U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service that unless it acts within 60 days on the American Federation of Aviculture’s petition to delist the golden parakeet they will sue to force action. AFA's contention is that the species, which once declined to 1000-2,500 individuals has rebounded to 10,000-20,000. They further contend that breeders have supplied enough birds to decrease incentives for wild bird trappers and current regulations actually hurt breeders because owners must get a federal permit to sell the bird across state lines. The requirement makes it more difficult and expensive for breeders to maintain a genetically diverse flock. - From http://blog.pacificlegal.org/outdated-golden-parakeet-regulations/

- Didja Know: At one time, there were only 13 Puerto Rican parrots left on earth. Captive breeding programs have dramatically increased their numbers, though the species is still endangered.

- Psittacine Cinema: Parrot sings Margaritaville - YouTube

- Good Night (for) Parrots: The night parrot was considered extinct for more than 75 years but in 2013 it was rediscovered at a site that was kept secret in Queensland, Australia. However, the government is concerned the location has been compromised. Researcher Steve Murphy said he and his partner Rachel Barr recently captured a chance encounter with a night parrot on camera but a week later, they discovered the nest had been plundered.Bush Heritage Australia has installed solar-operated satellite cameras to protect the critical habitat, the same technology used to police poaching in Africa. By enforcing an exclusion zone, heavy penalties can be served on anyone encroaching into the nature reserve without authorization. - From http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-06-05/habitat-of-endangered-night-parrot-placed-under-exclusion-zone/7475674

- All's Fair: What goes on at those bird fairs? Whether you own a parakeet in a cage or an aviary full of macaws - or just want to see a lot of cool birds- you should check one out. See "All's Fair at the Bird Fair", George Sommers' Page 8 feature story in the May The Pet Gazette.
