Garden Birds of South Africa – Sparrows

Description

A pictorial introduction to birds in and around a suburban South African garden with particular reference to the Western suburbs of Johannesburg and Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens.

I have attempted to source reference of the eggs and various egg colours wherever possible.

  • FOOD: Seeds, insects, plant material, fruit, nectar
  • HABITAT: Rural and urban Arid & Semi-arid areas
  • NEST: In shrubs, trees and man-made structures eg. rafters. Untidy ball of grass and twigs lined with feathers and man-made materials such as string, strips of palstic bags etc.

House Sparrow (Passer domesticus)

  • FOOD: Mainly seeds. Also insects, plant material, fruit, scraps like bread etc.
  • HABITAT: Widespread rural and sub-urban areas
  • NEST: In shrubs, trees and man-made structures eg. rafters. Untidy ball of grass and twigs lined with feathers and man-made materials such as string, strips of palstic bags etc.

Grey Headed Sparrow (Passer diffuses)

Male and female are similar
Male and female are similar
  • FOOD: Mainly seeds. Also insects, fruit, nectar.
  • HABITAT: Near settlements, Acacia woodland
  • NEST: In holes trees and man-made structures and in old swallow and weaver nests.
