German Shepherd vs Indian Shepherd Dogs

German Shepherds are the one among most popular dogs in the world, they are strong, energetic and intelligent dogs from the working category of dogs. They were developed from Germany for herding and guarding sheep and nowadays they are among the best police and military service dogs. German Shepherd dogs are known as GSD, Alsatian, Alsatian wolf dog and Schaferhund.

German Shepherds are multitalented dogs, which are one of the most demanded dogs in the world. They are the second most registered breeds in the USA and fourth in the UK. For last 10 years they are 3rd most demanded dogs in Europe and one among the top 10 most demanded dogs in Asian countries. Their unmatched quality and worldwide popularity makes them a standard to compare other shepherd and herding dogs. They are the second most demanded dogs in India after Labrador Retrievers that are often compared with native shepherd dogs of herding category. These five are the most comparable Indian dogs.

1. Indian Gaddi Shepherd

The Gaddi dogs are medium to large sized India dogs of herding category, originated from the Himachal state in north India, which are considered an oldest descendant of the Tibetan Mastiff and also known as Gaddi Shepherd, Gaddi Mastiff, Himachali Pahari Kutta and Indian panther Hounds.

Gaddi are a gentle and friendly dog, which are an active, alert, loyal, courageous, intelligent and protective dogs. They are a little bigger and heavier than German shepherds and naturally healthy free roaming, semi domesticated Pariah type dogs. They were groomed by local shepherds for hunting and livestock guarding purposes, but also they are well recognized for their fearless nature and higher stamina and speed. Guide dogs are reputed to be strong enough to repulse attacks by snow leopards, and are very intelligent to herd stray sheep and goats back to their pens.

Bhotia dogs are working and hearding dogs that are very similar to Gaddi dogs of India (Himachal Pradesh). Bhotia dogs are slightly shorter and less hairy in comparison with Gaddi Dogs, but have equal weight and similar physical traits. Bhotia dogs are mainly found in the Uttrakhand State of India and are also known as Bhutia, Bhotia Shepherd and Pahari kutta. They were developed by native people to protect house and livestock. They are an intelligent, friendly and lively dogs that easily get along with other pets and strangers. Though they are excellent door guard, but not recommended for apartment living. But they are a strong, sturdy and athletic dogs that need lots of physical exercise and running.

Himalayan sheepdogs are endangered dogs from Laddakh and Himalayan region of India. They're also known as Himalayan guard dogs or indigenous mastiff and Indian Mastiffs. They are supposed to be the close relative of Tibetan mastiff (Both, descendant of Himalayan dogs). Himalayan sheepdogs are giant, calm and lovable and friendly dogs who loves to please its master and be around its owner and family. They are very strong, courageous and giant dogs, which were used for personal protection and to protect live stock. A full-grown male is capable of taking down two wolves on its own. Usually very gentle and calm, but they do not like the company of other dogs, and can be very ferocious if something goes wrong. They are known to fight to the death.

Bakharwal dogs are the shepherd type dogs from Kashmir, India. They were developed by a Muslim nomadic group in Kashmir region of India called "Gujjars". The name Bakharawal is taken from the word "Bakri," meaning goat, because they were bred to protect goats and sheep from predators like wolf, bear and panthers. They are Very protective, loyal, friendly and devoted dogs that are very suitable for living in cold climates. Bhakharwal dogs are available in Kashmir, Leh Ladakh region of India and also have available in some parts of Pakistan.

Kashmiri Sheep Dogs are a relatively new breed which commonly mistaken with Bhakarwal dogs of India. Kashmiri Sheep Dogs are much smaller than Bakharwal, Butia or Gaddi dogs. But they are very active, energetic and intelligent dogs that looks like a bigger form of Indian Spitz dogs. Their origin is not clear, but some breeders from the region suggests they are the cross between sheep dogs of the Himalayan region with Indian Pariah or Indian Spitz dogs. There is another theory also that believe they are the cross between an extinct sheep dog of Laddakh region. These Dogs mainly available in Jammu and Dharmshala, they are also available in Uttrakhand, Punjab, Himachal state of India.
