Glow Collars For Dogs and Cats-Finally No More Tripping Over Pets in the Dark

Updated on January 29, 2010

My Experience with Falling Over the Dog

Glow in the dark and lighted collars for pets! Cats and dogs both! My problem was solved!

Earlier this year, I had heart bypass surgery, and even though it has been several months, I am still a little sore. Especially when I over-do, and especially when I trip over my solid black Lab/Hound mix dog, Ziggy, in the dark and fall flat on my face! I honestly thought I had broken something, and literally saw stars for a few seconds...I never have been very graceful (I can even fall UP stairs...), and things seem to be getting worse as I get older. Of course, having a solid black dog in the house at night, even with several night lights just doesn't work out too well. Our carpet is dark also, and we live in the country, so when it is dark, it is really DARK! Ziggy can lay down, and he just kind of disappears into the shadows of the carpet. My husband and I both have stepped on him and tripped over him numerous times. Little did I know someone had solved my problem. i just wasn't looking in the right place!

After the last big fall, I got on the Internet and started a search for some kind of remedy to the situation. I was tired of hurting both myself and the dog, but had no idea how many options I had out there! I found not only "glow" collars, which work by soaking up the suns rays, and then glow all night, but there are also lighted collars and leashes for walking your dog at night, plus ensuring your dog's safety by making them easier to see at night, not to mention helping out the owner of the pet so you don't break your neck! So I chose a red collar that was battery operated with a watch battery, which can either glow constantly, or has a blinking option. It is made of the same type of canvas material as any collar, It just has a lighted section inserted into the top part of the collar. Now I kind of wish I had have gotten the solar one, because I don't want to have to worry about buying batteries all of the time. plus I think the price of the solar one is a bit cheaper. I haven't seen that type, but my husband has and he said the quality was fine and looked like it would last quite a long time.

Well, the collar arrived in the mail very soon after ordering, and I could barely wait until night to try it out. Talk about wonderful! This is one of those items that makes you think, "Why didn't I think of that...?". I haven't tripped over the dog since, and neither has my husband. Now, when Ziggy goes outside at night, we can find him without screaming for him from the front porch, only to find out he was about 5 feet from us the whole time. For anyone who lives in the country, I definitely suggest one, especially if you have a dark colored dog or cat. if you live in the city, I would suggest the lighted leash and collar for your safety as well as the pet's.It will make it so much safer when you walk your pet at night. And the price is right also. They begin around $10,00 and go up from there. You can get different colors and designs, but just be sure to measure your pet's neck so you get the right size.

So, the next time you have a problem with tripping over your pet at night, or would rather avoid doing it at all, I have found the perfect solution. Not only is my dog happier, I feel safer in my own home, and Ziggy is no longer in danger of being stepped on or hurt by one of us accidentally falling over or on him. Plus we get the added advantage of being able to find him outside at night easier. Try one-I can almost guarantee you will feel much safer in your home at night if you have to get up before the sun does!

These are great if you are only going to use them for short times...I found out that I ran through batteries every three days if I left it on all night, which is what I needed!!
