The Chinese Crested Dog

The Chinese Crested dog is a member of the AKC's toy dog group. Chinese Cresteds adore companionship. They are very agile and alert little dogs although many are perfectly happy just snuggling their humans.

The breed stands at about 12” at the shoulder and dogs weigh about 10 pounds. Their coats can be any color and their skin can even be spotted. Although the Chinese Crested has been developed in China its roots may stretch back to the African continent. Chinese Cresteds were taken on board ships and used to hunt rats during the Chinese plagues.

There are two types of Chinese Crested – hairless and powderpuff. These types are defined by coat. The hairless is the variety most people think of when they imagine a Chinese Crested. These dogs have smooth, hairless bodies with hair only on their heads, feet, and tails. The powderpuff has a long, silky double coat all over its body.

Some Thoughts About Naming Your Dog

There are lots of ways to go about naming your dog. Below is some food for thought when you are trying to come up with that perfect name for your dog or puppy..

Names Based on Coat Type: One source of inspiration is your dog's coat. Do you have a hairless or a powderpuff? If you have a hairless variety you might try names like Satin, Mohawk, or Goblin. If your dog has a full coat you might go with names like Silk or Cotton.

Names for a Ship's Ratter: Since the Chinese Crested used to serve as a ratter on ships, keeping the vessel's food stores safe, you might try names that reflect this fierce lineage. Something like Killer or Bandit could serve well.

Names Based on Chinese Heritage: Although the Chinese Crested was developed on more than one continent, it is primarily known as a Chinese dog. Try names from that part of the globe like Ping, Wushu, and Gong.

Names Based on Color and Pattern: The Chinese Crested dog can have any combination of color and pattern in her coat. The hairless variety often has many spots on the skin. You can use names like Apricot, Pewter or Speckles in honor of your dog's coat.

Names Based on Size: Chinese Crested dogs are part of the AKC's Toy group. Your name can reflect your dog's petite size. Think names like Pocket or Token.

Names Based on Personality: The Chinese Crested can be lively and full of joy or completely devoted to snuggling. Your pet's name can come from his personality. Popcorn, Snuggles, or Comfort could all work.
