Great Toys for Hedgehog Fun
Happy, Healthy Hedgehog
Hedgehogs are used to moving around a lot in the wild. They are playful creatures that need stimulating toys in order to keep them happy and healthy. Having lots of fun toys for your Hedgie to play with can also boost your interaction with him (or her) as you can get involved too!
Get a Playpen
Hedgehogs need space as they love to run and exercise. So if you don't have a nice big cage for them, perhaps think of getting a playpen. I use a kiddies size blow up pool that is not huge and fits neatly in my room.
In this playpen are all my hedgies favourite toys and there is loads of room to play, run, eat and sleep.
If you have other pets that may harm your hedgehog, it is probably a better idea to have a closed wire cage. But size counts when you have a hedgehog, so make it big!
Every Hedgehog Loves to Tube
Tubing is the most fun for hedgies (for some odd reason). My hog has a few tubes. Toilet roll tubes are the quickest way to get tubes. You need to cut them down the length of one side so your hedgie doesn't get stuck, but they have endless fun rolling in these and falling over.
I also use a big L shaped plumbing tube that I got from the hardware store. My hedgie LOVES this!
Hedgies also love it if you hide treats in their tubes.
Hedgies also love a good soft toy. They can snuggle up with one in their beds or, like mine does, they can push them around their play area. The chosen soft toy should not be too big, so huge teddies would probably not work well and would just take up playing space.
Other Excellent Toys
Hedgies will also love:
- A big wheel to run on - this provides hours of fun for my hedgie and it is excellent exercise too!
- Cat toys that he can push around like jingly balls. But be careful the ball doesn't have little holes in it that your hedgies foot can get caught in.
- Try getting a few plumbing PVC pipes and make a maze for your hedgehog. They love it!
- Hedgehogs love to burrow - so perhaps an old blanket with no loose threads would be fun for your hedgie to burrow under.
