How To Love Cats

Updated on March 22, 2013

Abraham Lincoln did it, so did Freud and T.S. Eliot. They knew how best to love cats by understanding them and appreciating the creatures that they are. It is with quotes, pictures and videos that this article attempts to help you understand them too!

They are one of those animals that either encapsulates you or creates an inherent, inexplicable fear. The one thing is for sure, cats cause a reaction! But why?

Let me take you on a journey of the why's and wherefores into the world of cats. Through learning how to appreciate these beings, whether you are a cat hater or lover, you will be seduced by the power of the cat! Enjoy!

'The Owl looked up to the stars above, and sang to a small guitar, 'O lovely Pussy! O Pussy my love, what a beautiful Pussy you are, you are, you are! What a beautiful Pussy you are!' Quote - Edward Lear, The Owl and the Pussy-cat poem.

Cat Admirer Or Cat Hater - Cats Produce A Reaction!

Cats: Freakish, mesmerising, lovable, beautiful, mystical, ancient, adoring, evil, enlightening, independent and honourable.

These are just a few words that people describe these gorgeous and compelling creatures. Each one of them so individual and respondent. One thing is sure, they produce a reaction. They touch every one's spirit, whether you are an admirer or a hater. There is no getting away from it... they provoke a reaction!

There Is No Controlling Cats

The truth of the matter is, you don't choose a cat - they choose you! There is no controlling cats. They watch you, anaylise you and focus in on you whenever they want to. You can't woo a cat - unless they let you - but they can woo you!

Even for those who see them as freakish and evil - given time, they will woo you if they so wish. You don't have a choice, you are just a human!

Bereavement In Cats

I reluctantly post the following video, but felt that people need to see how 'human' cats can be.  This clip demonstrates the bereavement and grief of a fellow cat.  I, personally, can't bare to watch it as it makes me cry, so if you are like me, please don't watch - just appreciate that there is more to cats than meets the eye.

Cats Have Feelings - Grief And Bereavement

How To Love Cats When You Are A Cat Hater

If you are a cat hater, you can learn to love cats. Hate is akin to love and all you need to do is reverse this negative reaction and turn it positive.

How would you do this? Analyse yourself. Why do they provoke such a negative force from within you? Why is it that they penetrate your very being? Is it because you feel naked in their presence? Is it because they seem to have the ability to talk without speech, to demand from you as if you are insignificant in their presence? Do they make you feel belittled?

If this is the case, you fear them.

You fear what they can see, what they can do and what they represent.

But, fear not.

Believe it when I say you can seduce a cat as much as they can seduce you, if allowed.

A Lovely Cat and Bird Story

Gifts And Cats

To show their appreciation for the love you show them, they are compelled to bring you a present. They can't go out and buy you a gift. Neither can they wrap it up nicely for you. So, what you get is a prized bird or rodent, with their head munched off.

Not only have they found you the perfect gift, for they give you what they would like to receive themselves, but they have prepared and presented it to you fresh.

Can you understand how alarmed they are when you shout, wave you hands up and down and throw the 'good for nothing' cat out in the cold for the night?

You have rejected the gift which they have so lovingly prepared. It seems to the cat that the gift was just not good enough, so they bring you another only to be rejected again.

Next time, try saying 'good cat' and 'how lovely', for if you have accepted their gift, there is no need to hunt another - for a while, anyway! How would you like it if you bought someone a gift and rejected you, too?!

Cats Are Isolates And Autistic!

It has been suggested that all cats have Asperger's Syndrome. When you consider this, you will start to understand why cats are isolates, don't take kindly to direct eye contact - especially when wide-eyed, and why they will simply do what they want to do.  Perhaps cats are autistic?

Yes, cats are obsessive. Watch how they are ritualistic in their toileting and how that ritual, once taught, can be transfered within the homes of people. Take a look at this video!

Look at how the birds tease them and how fixated they become when they hunt them. The concentration is immense, it is as if they are in another zone, without distraction.

Cats have super sensitive hearing, just like their Asperger's autistic friends, and have other heightened perspectives on their senses.  Of course a cats reaction to social signals is not so dissimilar to those with autistic spectrum disorder.

In understanding cats, therefore, you will understand the uniqueness and individuality of people who have asperger's syndrome and if you understand people who have asperger's syndrome, then you will understand the behaviour of cats!

Fear not of a cat, they are not as strange as you think they are!  Take a look at 'All Cats Have Asperger's Syndrome' by Kathy Hoopmann to find out more.

All Cats Have Asperger Syndrome By Kathy Hoopmann

Don't Touch What A Cat Loves - It Is His Obsession!

Cats are obsessive, particularly about items that mean a great deal to them. They can adopt their special toys, but be warned, don't make an enemy of him or he will spit!

Observing human behaviour may lead to something valued once by a child, then adopted by the cat! Perhaps the cat wants the attention shown to a toddler and by taking the valued item, places significance to the item's worthiness. Items like dummies or pacifer's seem to be popular to some cats and will often get 'territorial' over such objects.

Opportunistic Cats

When You Understand Cats, You Have Nothing To Fear

When you understand cats, you realise that you have nothing to fear. You can look a cat in the eye and know that if they choose to look back, you are honoured by their attention. One thing is for sure, whilst looking, make sure your eye lids are slightly closed. This is non threatening.

Whilst you look, think nice thoughts, think calm and think love. Feel the love from your heart whilst looking at the cat and don't be surprised to see the cat react by blinking back. Did I say that blinking at the cat helps to seduce it? Well, it does and whilst you gently speak, the vibration reassures the cat that you are friend and not foe.

Dog Sharing The Cat Love

Cats, Seduction and Unconditional Love

Now you have permission to stroke the cat. He may rub himself and purr. His tail may fly and gently sway like a breeze on a hot summers day. You are honoured as he displays his unconditional love to you. There is nothing for him to gain, he is just sharing the love!

In learning how to love cats, you need to be open to the ritual of seduction. If a cat turns his back to you, she is just not interested in your seduction. No matter how hard, sometimes, you try to coach the cat, she will just not be in the mood to communicate with you. However, the good news is that as you might understand this concept, what stops you from turning your back to them?

-* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--* -*--*

  • 'Cats are the ultimate narcissists. You can tell this because of all the time they spend on personal grooming. Dogs aren't like this. A dog's idea of personal grooming is to roll in a dead fish'. ~ James Gorman

Cats Don't Like To Be Ignored!

Just like some people, some cats like a challenge. If you turn your back to them, they might fuss around you. It is as if they are trying to endear you and won't let you go until you acknowledge them. You see, cat's - just like people - can feel insecure too and want to be the centre of attention - but only when they choose! Yes, just like the traits of people with asperger's, they too are pretty self absorbed!

So, is it any wonder that cats target cat haters? No one likes to be ignored, now, do they?

  • 'Of all God's creatures, there is only one that cannot be made the slave of the leash. That one is the cat. If man could be crossed with a cat it would improve man, but it would deteriorate the cat'. ~ Mark Twain

The Egyptian's Really Knew How To Love Cats!

Cats are special. The ancient Egyptians understood this.

They honoured cats, revered them and were passionate about their mystical powers.

Known as the mau (meow?), a cat goddess was worshipped with a lion's head called Mafdet, however the domestic deity known as Bastet, was the type of pussy we all know today.

Worshipping cats for their mystical characteristics and their abilities to nurture, hunt and protect were fundamental in ancient Egypt, even in law!

Cat adoration from ancient Egypt started some 2,000 B.C. and idolised to such an extent where former owners would be in deep mourning after their pets death.

They would even express this by shaving their eye brows off.

As you can see, the Egyptian's really knew how to love cats!

You can read more about this in the 'Egyptian Mau History' link situated in the resource box.

Macavity - The Mystery Cat

Old Possum's Book Of Practical Cats by T.S. Elliot

Eliot, Freud and Lincoln, Knew How To Love Cats

'A time with cats is never wasted'. This was a quote by Freud. He had empathy with cats and understood the value of them in comfort and intregue.

Another great cat lover is T.S. Eliot. He dedicated a whole book to them in the 'Old Possum's Book Of Practical Cats'. Here he produces the most marvellous poetry about the different types of cats and their characteristics that, obviously, inspired him. From 'Macavity, the Mystery Cat to 'The Naming of Cats', he seems to have weighed them all up, somewhat in this fine book!

'The naming of cats is a difficult matter. It isn't just one of your holiday games. You may think at first I'm mad as a hatter. When I tell you a cat must have three different names' ~ T.S. Eliot

In understanding cats, the likes of Eliot, Freud and Lincoln, knew how best to love cats. Now you have an insight, so will you!

Well, as a fellow cat lover, I won't critique this article other than to say that the more positive articles about cats out there, the better and you have mt total respect as an animal lover.

Loved the way you told the lady on the forum who asked whether anybody had seen her runaway cat that you had it right with you at home. And she believed you! That was one of the finer moments. I admired your cool arrogance. W.E.

TammyL - yes it is true - Egypt honoured their cats. They would train them to retrieve animals when people hunted them - in fact they would assist on the hunt! How clever is that?!

Domino sounds looooovely - although not too sure about the armpit fettish!

Yes, the mourning cat was really sad, I only watched a few seconds before I was in tears - my husband watched the rest! You have to be really made of sturdier stuff than I to watch it through. But it does go to show, they have feelings of empathy, just like us humans.

Glad you liked the article! Take care... meooooow!

It is true that Ancient Egyptians had laws centered around cats. It was considered good luck to care for at least one cat in the person's lifetime. This was also a law. Killing a cat was punishible by death. Studies have shown that a cat's cry prompts the same response in humans as that of a human infant. The first hub that I wrote was about my cat which has been nominated for Hubnuggets this month. My husband was not a cat lover when Domino first came to our family. Now, nearly 5 years later, he adores our cat. Domino doesn't like it when I'm putting something together. He will come up behind me and take a plug out of the fleshy part of the back of my upper arm. I had to turn off the video of the cat in mourning. It was too sad for me to watch.

I thoroughly enjoyed this hub. Thank you.

Cats in the house. There are cats in the house, the house of cats... I like cats: they taste like chicken! OK, I would never eat a cat, or dog.. Perhaps a "hot dog!"

Great article. Lots of love shown...

UW - Give Boo one of his favourite strokes from me! Perhaps under the chin, so he melts in your lap?!

When I am done with kids, travel and everything... I want a house full of cats - meowing and spitting, with all their little personalities - 25 will do, and I will be known as that odd cat woman down the street - the eccentric one that the children wont go near because I smell of cats and wear a big hat with a flower! lol *wink*.. you know, dont you?

Pamela - how lovely! According to one of the owners, on my research, she blamed the x husband for not flushing the loo when he peed - it wasnt until she caught her cat in the act that she blamed the wrong man! hehehe So, her cat was clever enough to learn all by himself! Isnt that wonderful?!

Shaz, I adore cats. I have a large 17 pound tuxedo colored cat with a big fluffy tail (strictly indoors as I do not want to lose another one) that is the most gentle loving car I have ever owned. He loves everyone, but I am the chosen one. If I lie down for a nap he curls up by my chest, purring and he will put his face in my hand, or sometimes he will lie under the covers. I wish I knew how to teach him that toilet trick!
