How to Train your Shih Tzu basic tricks

Updated on June 10, 2011

Your Shih Tzu

Shih Tzus have a history of being spoiled and stubborn, due to their royal ancestry. They are loyal and well-mannered dogs and despite their high self-esteem, can be trained to do basic tricks and to follow commands. This article will describe steps to help you train your cute little buddy to do tricks, whether they be for showing-off or for your own entertainment.

Step 1: Have your dog's favorite treats ready and show him/her that you have them

Step 2: Say a command (sit, lay, roll over, high five) speaking loudly and clearly

Step 3: Show them what to do

Step 4: Give them a treat after you show them the trick

Step 5: Repeat steps 2-4

Step 6: Repeat the command and see if they do it without your help. If they do not, try helping them a few more times until they understand what you want them to do.

Step 7: Repeat until mastery

Hopefully your Shih Tzu remains patient throughout the process. They are very intelligent dogs and will learn quickly once they get the hang of it. Good luck and have fun!
