Hypoallergenic Dog Food List

Updated on April 1, 2013

The “best hypoallergenic dog food” is not the same as for another as it all boils down to what ingredient each dog is allergic to. Food allergy is one of the most common types of allergies in dogs. However, figuring out exactly what food ingredient your dog is allergic to is very difficult. To help you determine which substances or ingredients to avoid, you need to start off with a visit to the veterinarian. The first steps to diagnose your dog’s condition is doing a review on his medical history and going through a physical examination. Though the symptoms may look like food allergies, it can also be something else. A food allergy happens when a dog food ingredient invokes a response from the immune system, causing itchiness, redness, and irritated skin. Some dogs may also develop sores, chronic ear infections, or hives.

Food allergies can make dogs uncomfortable. It is the third most common cause of allergies in dogs. Genetics and environment are factors in determining whether it develops into allergies to particular foods. In some cases, for a canine to become allergic is to have him exposed to the allergen one or many times. However, most canines that become reactive to substances in which they’ve been exposed to they’ve consumed for many years is paradoxical.

The most common allergens for dogs are lamb, egg, beef, chicken, soy, pork, fish, and rabbit. Some spices and additives are also known to start an allergic reaction. When a dog food allergies strike, most likely two or more ingredients are the culprit.

To diagnose which allergens can trigger the reaction, your dog will have to go through a test diet. This means taking your dog off the foods that you usually provide – from snacks and treats to canned food and kibble. Usually, the veterinarian will choose a simple ingredient diet that contains one protein and one carbohydrate that your dog has never eaten before. You will have to monitor your dog and see if his itching stops. Usually, it can take ten weeks to see any improvement.

When your dog’s condition has improved, foods that you usually give him and are suspected of being allergens are reintroduced into your dog’s diet one at a time to determine which ingredients really make your dog sick. It will also help determine which are hypoallergenic for your dog. The veterinarian may suggest other foods so you will have plenty of diet options.

Most vets will recommend diets that are considered ultra allergen-free which contain food that use hydrolyzed protein. Hydrolyzed protein is a processed protein and it is so small that it won’t cause an allergic reaction.
