March 12, 2012 - Premier Issue

What a truly beautiful morning today…when I was out at Boomer Lake, it was between 52 and 59 degrees. There were several species of ducks out and about, the Green Winged Teal, the ever present Mallard, American Coots, and Lesser Scaup. Our colony Canada Geese are proliferating on the island, and breeding season is well underway. I noticed several males out there asserting themselves and a few battles ensued, but none of them were the lesser for wear. Several Black Vultures were riding the air currents and seemed to be enjoying themselves, too. I was kept in check by the populous Red-Winged Blackbird, who several times offered wonderful photo opportunities. Putting myself out on a limb this morning(not literally), I’m going to say that spring is here. As luck would have it, I managed to get a number of great photos of a Yellow Warbler, who made no qualms about announcing his presence today. There were also Northern Cardinals, Catbirds, Northern Mockingbirds, Eurasian Collared Doves, and a red squirrel frolicking about in the grass. When he noticed a yellow lab nearby, he adroitly made his way to what he considered the safety of a young redbud tree. For additional news, the Purple Martin houses are being put up, new trees are being planted, and plenty of people were enjoying the jogging trails. Here at Boomer Lake, there are many opportunities to spend family time at the covered pavilions that have barbecue grills, beautiful landscaping, a 5K walking and jogging path, a boat ramp to enjoy fishing and water sports, and as I just mentioned, numerous birds for the birdwatchers and photographers. It isn’t even spring yet, and things are getting underway for a terrific season of things to do around the lake. Hope to see you here sometime soon.

Hey, moonlake! They are all over the lake here, and it really is always a pleasure to see them, with that gorgeous red and yellow epaulet. Thanks for the vote!

Just stopped in to say red winged blackbirds are my favorite birds. Great photo! Do you have yellow headed blackbirds where you are from?

There are several blackbirds in this country, but I have only met this one so far, Nettlemere.

Interesting to see the red winged blackbird (well names!) - it looks like it's been shot and about to bleed to death - very startling plumage. We only get all black blackbirds in the UK.
