This is Mima's Story
This is Mima, a dog from Bulgaria. All her paws were butchered from her legs and for no justifiable reason, apparently all of it started over an old conflict between neighbors. Mima is the face of hope for change in Bulgarian law.
On March 26th Dobromir Donchev from Drianovo, Bulgaria found Mima lying crippled near his home. All four paws of the 5-years -old female dog were axed. Donchev took Mima to the vet immediately where she was stabilised. He is sure the crime was done by a neighbour because of an old fight between them but there seems nothing he can do about it. There is no zoo police or animal rights watch groups in Bulgaria and no proper punishment for such acts. Therefore the investigation, if any, and justice for this inhumane act is slow and would never have any justice if it weren't for the efforts of some amazing people around the world who saw this and acted.
Bulgarian people are now pleading for justice! Thousands of people around the world have already banded around this issue in support of Mima asking you to please show your support now! Currently, there are no laws against Animal Cruelty in Bulgaria. Sadly, the monster who did this to Mima will likely go unpunished. However, due to this horrific crime and outrage from Bulgarians and citizens from around the world, there are now talks of new laws being passed. We hope that when this happens, that they will be implemented. Hopefully this case will set the long waited changes of Bulgarian Law against Animal abuse. The most major movement has been at the Care2 petition site / or thepetitionsite.com/1/punishment-for-the-man-crippled-mima . Here you can sign the international petition to enact punishment for the man who crippled Mima.
At the time I am writing this there are currently 12, 037 signatures and climbing.
Since the onset groups in have rallied and now you are seeing headlines like "Bulgaria Proposes Jail Time for Animal Cruelty" almost everywhere. Bulgaria's Agriculture Minister, Miroslav Naydenov, is proposing 1 to 5 years behind bars for individuals convicted of committing acts of cruelty against animals. Naydenov, wants jail time for cases of animal cruelty, which are not rare in the country.
The amendment will be included in the new Penal Code, and was triggered by Bulgaria's latest animal cruelty case where an unknown perpetrator cut the four paws of a dog in the town of Dryanovo. The amendment was requested from Naydenov by representatives of animal rights organizations, who met with the Agriculture Minister Tuesday. Meanwhile, an online petition collected thousands of signatures for incriminating acts of animal cruelty. The amendments will be prepared by a working group of lawyers, Members of the Parliament and NGOs.
Perhaps the most amazing thing about this story is that this entire movement would not have even got off the ground if it were not for the tireless efforts of a single woman Nadia Donato. She has been doing most of the work through her Facebook site, she has been keeping daily updates, photos, videos and news reports about Mima open and is an excellent example of using social networking to its fullest potential. Unofficially she appreciates all interests and help. But please keep your activities Mima related if you visit her for she is truly overwhelmed by the numbers of people and responses that she is having to deal with daily.
Despite the vicious and brutal torture Mima endured, she still is a trusting, sweet soul and is a true survivor. She now has a new guardian, Mrs. Violeta Dobreva who will shower her with the love and care she deserves. There is now a good chance that Mima will be able to walk again soon! Organizations involved are asking that anyone who can please donate what you can for the cost of Mima's surgery and prosthetic limbs so she can live the rest of her life comfortably. Any overages from this collection (if any) will go towards helping the many animals in desperate need in Bulgaria.
On a personal note as the author of this article, I need to thank my mom who is one of those unknown thousands - for she has been bugging me about this for almost a month, and her efforts made me give this incident some personal attention. She and many other empathizers are due a moment of silence an wish Mima all the healing and love in the world.
These are all the official things that Nadia Donato asks and recommends you do, if you want to help in some say.
First of all if you can do nothing else, forward information, articles and every news clip CNN has to offer (again check Facebook for these things) - and spread the word, this would help mainly for the petition and the efforts to try to get Mima on the live televised CNN news, which at the time of this writing she still has not. Below are the many other ways you can help if have the means.
We hope that this never happens again!
