Pet Accessories and Grooming for your Dog

Updated on June 6, 2010

Pet accessories come in a wide range of prices and varieties. These include food and water bowls, brushes, soaps, shampoos, leashes, collars, clothing, pet guards, oil, etc. Most of the pets give a hard time to their masters when it comes to grooming. The owners do not know whether they should take care of the pets themselves or hire a grooming service. When they themselves take care of the pets, they are confused with what shampoo to use, which brushes work best, which parts be cleaned, and to what extent is the grooming needed.

Grooming: Fashion or a necessity?

Nobody likes to hug a wet smelly dog; on the other hand, a healthy, neat and tidy one jumping around the house would be a sight to see. Pets have access to all the living spaces in our homes, right from our bedrooms to dining area. Also, our family plays with them like pals. Thus, keeping them hygienic, healthy and fresh is a necessity. Regular grooming prevents them from getting lethargic or feeling ignored. If you provide proper care to your four-legged friend, its chances of staying and keeping other people healthy increases. Regular grooming can help prevent some of the common problems with pets like hair shedding, paw disorders, skin infection, while you might catch a wound or blue spot that might have gone unnoticed otherwise.

Groom and bathe your pet yourself

It takes some time and training on your part to be an expert pet groomer, but it isn't dificult to get started.  There are some advantages to grooming your pet yourself like, the pet relates more to you and strikes a long-term bond. Some of the concerned areas of pet care are skin, nails, ears, hair, paws and tail. You will need brush, comb, shampoo, conditioner, nail file, ear care products, etc. Some varieties of the brushes used by a dog groomer include slicker brush, pin brush, bristle brush, porcupine brush and rubber grooming glove. All these brushes have their usages. There are certain products that work best with certain body growth like long hair or broad ears. Do not overdo grooming like removing complete hair from dog’s body, which will leave it susceptible to dirt and sunlight causing skin infection and other disorders.

Various pet grooming supplies

Supplies can be found at a lot of stores, but knowing the right price, place and product is a challenge. For example, how do you know a certain shampoo will suit your pet’s skin and hair? The answer is simple. Do some research on dogs or consult a veterinarian or get in touch with experienced people. There’s a wide range of dog grooming supplies available in the market, right from cheap to costly ones.

Cost for Grooming Supplies

A dog brush like Love2Pet Brush would cost you about $21.25. Dog brushes remove the tangles, fallen hair, and other debris from dog’s body. Soothe Oatmeal shampoo for dogs will cost you about $8, while No-Rinse Kote Glow Touch-Up Dog and Puppy Shampoo would cost around $42. There are various kinds of combs like conventional metal comb, de-matting comb, undercoat rake, flea comb, etc. Oster Professional Pet Grooming Comb would cost you around $13. Clippers for dog grooming come in a number of varieties like electric clippers, stripping knives, scissors, shears etc. PowerPro Ultra dog clippers would cost you about $200.

Finding a Grooming Service

There are various pet grooming services available online through a simple Google search (For example, Google search: Dog Grooming in Seattle). Some pet groomers charge exorbitant sums of money, while others are reasonable in cost. Though the groomer will take care of your pet, you will likely have to transport your pet to the groomer's shop. The challenges with getting your pet groomed by an external agency include the regular commute time and getting the pet acquainted with a stranger. Even if you groom the pet yourself, it might be unruly initially. But with time, and regular grooming, your dog will develop a habit and get comfortable with it. If you feel that an experienced groomer will better suit you and your four-legged friend, there are some services which will visit your home to groom your pet, but they will probably charge higher rates. While choosing a grooming service, consider these points: What equipment are used? What are the safety guidelines? Are the groomers certified or experts? Some of the basic grooming services include nail and hair trimming, bathing, ear cleaning, removing of parasites and sanitary cleaning.

Exploring accessories

Finding pet accessories might be easier online than you might have thought. You can just click and see a wide range of choices that otherwise would take much longer if you went from store to store in your area. Since online stores do not keep any inventory, their product cost is more cost competitive thanproducts you'd buy at brick and mortar stores that keep inventory. This way, online stores pass on some cost savings and benefits to customers as well.
