A Joy to Behold

Little Ms. Smoky Mama and her kittens are doing so very well. With no cares and all needs taken care of, this sweet and delicate cat is able to concentrate all her time and energy on the rearing of her beautiful brood. Each and every day, I can see measurable changes; they're growing so rapidly and their individual personalities are emerging. When I enter their 'chambers,' little furry balls with huge eyes climb up my legs and meow for my attention. The kittens are very well adjusted and extremely happy. Just a few days ago, I noticed that they are beginning to eat solid, 'big kitty' food. They scramble over one another in efforts to reach the shallow plate that holds tiny morsels of tasty treats.

While I was away for a 6 day period that ended late last Tuesday, the 18th of October, it seemed that the kittens had doubled in size during my absence. Now, little legs are longer, eyes bright and alert and they exhibit curiosity about everything.

Tumbling, rolling and froliking; these little things are a huge source of pleasure. More to come as they continue to change and grow.

Hi Justateacher ! Yes, living in the country automatically seems to set us up as the local 'drop off' for unwanted animals. It's sad. I have in process, set up a trust which will protect all my animals upon my death...this way, they won't end up trying to fend for themselves all of a sudden. This is so sad and happens all the time because it isn't common or commonly known that options exist for such a thing. My friend is an animal advocate and Attorney...her specialty is estate planning and she's an animal advocate of the highest degree. She sets up trusts which include companion animals all the time. I also attended a conference in Kansas where legal, educational, Veterinary and other representatives presented so many options available for providing for animals when one no longer able due to health complications or is incapacitated or upon death. It was a great learning experience.

I 'm sorry that your mom's cats disappeared..I hope someone, down the road, took on her loving work. Thank you for commenting on this crazy Smoky Mama and Kittens so many others; she just showed up one day.

thank you so much for your loving nature and for the nice comment. Kathy

Awesome! I would love to have cats again, but where we live right now, we are allowed one pet...and Frankie the Wonder Dog is that pet...

Up until she passed away, my mom lived on farm in the middle of nowhere and animals were continually dumped near her one time she had over thirty cats (some with kittens) and four or five dogs...and she loved each and every one of them...after she passed, the cats just disappeared - and there is only one dog left...but she she is a pretty spoiled dog!

Hi happy that you liked this and I sure understand being behind in reading...I was "away" for almost a month and had to discontinue all the updates via email because my inbox was stuffed w/hundreds and hundreds and I just could not get to them...and, so, I am trying to catch up as much as possible. The kittens are not almost 2 months old and I took pics just last Tuesday, Nov. 8 before I flew out on Calif. right now for a few weeks and then it's back to will be a while before I can finally light in one place and call it home...thank you for taking precious time to visit and comment. I'll be posting the latest pics of kittens soon. Kathy

Dear Victoria, Tammy, Writer, Catman, Will, Ed. Marilyn, Augustine,Nell, Drobinson, John, Helen, Flora, Amy, Rosemary, Ruby, Ken, Dexter and Sally!

Thank you, each and every one! this experience is so very delightful and charged with happiness! An unexpected and potentially disastrous situation turned into a loving and rewarding situation all the way around.

Al and I will be keeping the family together...since we have the sanctuary; this is easier than it would be for most...since we can do it; this is what our hearts ask. I don't know that Smoky is a particular breed...honestly; I don't know much about breeds of cats since that has never entered the picture...usually, rescues are the cast off "ugly" or unwanted due to non purebred status. I think Smoky is a "Heinz 57." She IS gorgeous.

However, given some of the wonderful comments here..if those who mentioned an interest were nearby and able to love the kittens...I might (and that's a big might) consider loaning them out from time to time!! LO

Special note to WillStarr: We have 2 blind kitties at present. Honey Bear, who is now 15 years old, has been blind for lover a decade in fact, we suspect he was born blind. He was a rescue from the Ca. coast during a huge outdoor celebration where little kids were hauling him around admid all the noise and chaos. We coaxed him away and spoke w/the kids' mother who happily relinquished him into our care.

Presently, Goldie is going blind. We rescued her here in SE Kansas about 4 years ago. She was not blind but, all of a sudden, presented extremely dialated pupils. She obviously could not see as she was bumping into things...we rushed her to the Veterinarian; ran all kinds of diabetes, no high blood pressure...all systems "go." Only possibility is a brain tumor (which we chose not to do invasive procedures to long as she is faring well, and she is). Sometimes, blindness later in life is a result of diabetes or high blood pressure...and it can just be a failing of the eye, itself...not life threatening but, concerning since an older cat must relearn some things. If, though, your kitty remains in familiar environment; this transition is not as difficult. Just love him and watch over I know you will...and I'll be saying prayers. Not to worry...unless something major develops but, just as likely, nothing will. bless you.

Rosemary, bless you for rescuing that kitty who later became such a good mother...this is what it's all about, as far as I am concerned.

Ken, you are always so kind...thank you.

Amy, you know that I know how much you love and care for our four footed friends...and I am so appreciative for knowing that....makes the world just that much more sweeter.

Helen. I'm with you 1000%..and I know you care greatly..what a wonderful and reassuring and kind comment. Bless you as many times over as infinity!!

Tammy, I know you'll keep the family together...I love that...there is a special bond and it carries on for their entire lives. We had "Sneaker and the Sneakettes," a feral mother whom we tamed but, yikes!, she got away and finally returned home pregnant. We kept Boots, Muggs, Sneakette and Stevie....all have passed but Muggs who is with us in SE Kansas along w/long time rescue buddy "Honey Bear."

Maralexa..I know how much love you have for your animal companions and, to this day, I am still praying for a reunion..bless you my dear and kind and sensitive friend. are always such a source of make me smile with your always fun and funny comments...along with a huge heart!!

Love to all who have taken the time to visit and comment...and my

VERY SINCERE APOLOGIES for not having the time I wish to be online and continue to support all the fabulous writers and friends here on HP..I am heartily time, currently, is SO LIMITED...and I am no longer online in SE Kansas..until I return to Napa mid November but, I shall try my best. Please know that I am "jonesing"

I also second AE I need a little sister for my six year old Sabrina, she is lonely. I think it's about time for an addition. Can you package her up safely, and ship her off to me. I will pay you whatever you ask, within reason of course:0))) oh how sweet of you.....heck there are so many kittens and adult cats in my city, I am tripping all over them. What's going on, why are people abandoning them like that, how sad. Thank goodness we have kindness like us and you to help protect and care for them.

It is so nice to share the growing up of these adorable kittens so thank you for that. Our local vet gave us a cat the cat had been taken in abandoned at 2 weeks old. we fed ger with a bottle and she grew fine but was only small not receiving the proper mothers milk that they need. When she had a litter we kept her daughter who literally grew to twice her size. She was a great Mum and it was fascinating to watch her teach her daughter how to stalk and do do kitty things, but the funniest was always the clip around the ear she would give her. That always brought a smile to my face.

You are a great mum to these lovely little creatures and they are so lucky to have you.

Oh Kathy you've done it again you amazing person! I only have to read one of your wonderful hubs and look at those beautiful kitties and the world is a again a much brighter place!

I'm amazed at the kittens, not only by their beauty, but how different their markings and colours are - they are genuinely stunning! But then their beauty is no mystery at all, we only have to look at their gorgeous mum - Smoky is one cat in a million!

Muffin and Pancake are adorable and very, very beautiful! I'm afraid I have the same notions as Nell - I too want to scoop them all up - trouble is, I'd need an airplane instead of a car!

Voted up + awesome + beautiful!!!

Is Smoky Mama a particular breed of cat? I just ask because she has a jet black coat with golden eyes. Beautiful. Love the pictures of the cats. I've never had one because of allergies, but love watching them play and interact. My brother adopted one, and I didn't get sick once when I was visiting. Maybe my allergy has gone? Awesome hub, can't wait for you to come back!

Our 15 year old cat has suddenly gone about 90% blind. He seems to be able to discern light from dark, but that's about it. The vet says it could be one of a dozen things, but the outlook is not good, and he's old, so we are going to let nature take its course.

He's still content to eat and lay in someone's lap, so he's OK for now.

I remember when he was just a kitten like your babies!

up and across! they are so adorable! they bring back memories. i just moved my brood to their new quarters in the old trailer that has the run attached to it. for a whole 2 days i actually considered finding homes for them. but it tore me up so bad i just could not do it. i kept telling myself do what was best for the kittens...and in the end i realized keeping them was what was best for them. when i moved them to the new room, the terror that Alvin experienced showed me i was right. yet as soon as he saw i was still there and so were his siblings he quickly calmed down. they have adjusted well and are happy. They are almost 5 months old and never been away from each other. to separate them would be so cruel. i am so happy you are able to keep your little family together. thank you for all the love and care you give your furry babies.
