Saving Mother Cat and her Kittens

She Came Upon a Summer’s Eve

She came to me on a summer’s eve

She staked her claim.

She would not leave.

A tiny thing, so thin and meek

A safe, secure home

Did this little one seek

A must have situation

For one so weak

She walked right in,

No invitation did she need

Her circumstances were dire

Her eyes did plead

“Please give me a place

To lay my head,”

Please open your heart

To you I was led”

This diminutive soul

My heart did steal

I gave her a bed

And a warm meal

Pretty little thing, so small yet full

Her womb carried kittens

She had no where to go

We prepared her a shelter

Within our safe home

Cozy blankets, soft pillows

Where little ones could be born

In just a short while

The little mother cat

Brought on the sweetest smile

“Would you just look at that!”

She gave us five small bundles

So beautiful and sweet

She is a wonderful mother,

Her presence, such a treat.

Safe, secure, and strong

She will now live well and long

At the critical moment,

A wayward mama kitty

Did not go wrong

Forever taken care of

Will this sweet gentle creature be

Along with all her tiny kittens

And, they’ll grow old with me

Dedicated to Smoky Mama who appeared at my home very pregnant and in need of urgent help. Within 3 weeks, she gave birth to 5 kittens…all absolutely beautiful. Smoky is tiny; the smallest mother cat I’ve ever seen. Now, she and her kittens will live long happy and healthy lives and…as soon as it is safe to do so…Smoky Mama and her babes will be spayed and neutered.

I like to reread some of your earlier work, because I love the writing, the story, and the sweet heart who can't turn away from a cat in need. Caring for a houseful of abandoned cats, I can't imagin how anyone could feel that they can't manage housing one, and her kittens. There are so many ways to have a pet spayed or neutered for free these days. Smokey Mama should never have ended up on the street. She is blessed to have found you. You are blessed with a talent to so beautifully put your feelings into words. And we are blessed to be able to read your work. Thank you. Now I'm inspired to check out all the hubs about her kittens!

Hi Teylina, my dear, and gryphibn423 myt friend...well, these babies are now over 7 weeks old...huge, healthy fat and sassy. I've taken pics up to yesterday (Nov. 9) and will be posting soon so that everyone can see how far along they've come. Thank each and everyone for visiting and commenting...Smoky Mama appreciates your "virtual" support, too!

Sounds like the decade (if different locale) where I've been contemplating moving, considering the economy where I am! Maybe I really do need to rethink this like my friends have been telling me! Omg! I hadn't thought of that particular problem w/living "in the sticks" - and even cell phone service is questionable where I'm thinking about! Hate to think I've come down so far in values, but you make a valid point for how far we've come techno-wise! Hang in there. At least, all that really, really hard selling, clearing out and moving is behind you!

We're in the same boat, Teylina...right now, I have so little time and I'm not online in Kansas anymore....closed up everything as my home is now sold and the internet connection at the sanctuary..out in the 'sticks' is dial up, only...along w/landline service...ick! What decade are we in out here??? lOL Love ya,

Hi Mar..they are really so darn cute..And now, 2 1/2 weeks old and huge and eyes wide open. they haven't ventured out of their large carrier even though we removed the door...they are content, so far, to climb over oneanother and jumble up to sleep. Sweet doesn't even come close to how wonderful this little slice of life is. thank you my dear.

John, Nell, Sharyn and are all so wonderfully wonderful! I just am so imspired, hopeful, gladdened, encouraged and stronger for having your comments and heart here. It means the world...knowing that others share my love for and appreciation of these helpless and amazing animals is what keeps me keepin' on. Just yesterday, driving home from town; there was a beautiful calico cat laying right behind the wheel of a van...people were approaching...we stopped in the middle of the street, I jumped out and woke the cat up...she was asleep and would have been run over as they backed up. This poor baby appeared to, even at 10 minutes before closing; we called our fabulous Veterinarians who said "bring her in." We did...she is still there being hydrated, treated for infection, fleas, etc....and we're hoping for the best...she is thin and weak....and would most likely have stayed that way as the van backed over her...Instead; she has a great chance at a good life ... this is how it is here in the much need; so few willing to do so. Anyway...thank you all so much for the beautiful sentiments and comments. My dear friends!! Kathy

This was beautiful Kathy. Brings back all my memories when Momma Kitty came in to my life. Watching all those babies come in to this world was something I will always cherish. And watching Momma Kitty "come back to life" as she was so ill and frail are memories I will cherish forever. Several years later, she is now happy and healthy. Thank you for your kindness to these beautiful animals.

Hi, just came back to add that it reminded me of when my dog had puppies! after she had cleaned them up, and we left her alone for a few days, apart from helping her with food and cleaning the bedding, we eventually let them 'out' in the side room off the kitchen, and I plonked myself down in the middle of eight puppies, one mum and about ten blankets and sat there for an hour! bliss! lol

Hi Ruby....what a wonderful comment! I am thrilled. It means so much to me that others understand the beauty and value of these creatures. Thank you so much!

Victoria...YES! 6 kitties! That's great! And a dog, too...yes, we have dogs, as well...animals need people who can help them along the way and, I can think of nothing more meaningful to me than helping them..."Bless the Beasts and the Children." that's my guiding motto. thank you , Victoria..and I love your heart, too!!!

Kathy...well, there is no doubt in my mind that you understand 1000%....and I am so thankful that you saved that little mama and her babies...I LOVE that someone adopted them all together...I have such a hard time with the idea of separating families...I know some would think me nuts but, we try to keep everyone together...Smoky and her babies will grow old together..just like Sneaker and the Sneakettes, Mama Mia and Socks, Pretty Girl and Tabitha; and more...

The last thing we needed was more little furry bodies during this move but; heck...we'll make it work out somehow. My home is in contract..due to close the 14th of Oct...we're expanding the sanctuary in the much going on...and, now..

Little Ms. Smoky Mama and her kits. YIKES!!

Thank you my dear friend Chatkath!! glad you liked this. Part of my prayers in this life is to help others understand the value and beauty in animals....this little story is so sweet and so, I want to share it with everyone. Thank you for your kind comment and visit.

Catgypsy...Thank you my dear. I so appreciate your sentiment. Kathy

Oh Congratulations GrandMama Kathy!!! And what lucky little cats they are! This is such a beautiful story, I am so glad that they are all ok, thanks to your wonderful prenatal care. Instinct is alive and well, she knew right where to come. Whenever I have the opportunity to make a wish it is that all cats, all beings are loved and cared for by someone like you!

~ A very pregnant homeless tiger tabby cat that lived in my garage was small too but she had 4 healthy kittens(I love tabby cats!) not long before I moved. Mama and babies went to the same home and are doing fine, (I visit when I can)....

What lucky cats, Lucky Cats! Bless your soul. I have six felines of my own and would take in more if I had more time, money, and space. I'd take dogs, too. I have just one right now who demands to be the only dog--haha.

6 years ago from The beautiful Napa Valley, California you know that female Ginger Tabbys are very rare? One in 40! Bless you, Nell.

Augustine...YES. I have never seen a cat so big...probably because she is so small..Tiny! Her kittens are also quite large; even when born. We fed her very very well and very much the 3 weeks before she gave birth...the best available. So, thank problems, no still births...all is well! Thank you my friend, for visiting and nice comment! good to see your smiling face here...I can't help myself; this is what we are meant to do; my friend and I...thank you for the comment and for stopping by the continuing saga of lucky cats.

I to have a feline, she is a ginger Tabby and named Sabrina and I love her so as she does me. What beautiful pictures, if I was there I would be asking you for one of her kitties. My fellow poet and scribe Mike offered up a beautiful poem to you and your friends, he is an all purrring gentleman:-)

      I sought a place, as you've said,

So If not for your kindnesses,

My brood & I would now be Dead,

      Saw my plight, nature witnesses!

An Angel I sought coming near,

Your eyes so kind drew me in,

God it was who guided me here,

Yes you saw I was so very thin,

My Kittens and I, you now adore,

We trust you, love you and knew,

You're our hero and what's more,

For us, we thankful we found You!

That was a Great Story is this in lyrical form, Lucky Cats! You truly are a kind and gentle soul! I voted it up and pushed all the buttons that mattered on this one!
