World's Most Strange and Bizarre Animals

Updated on November 29, 2016

Earth is a very big place with millions and millions of different animal species. Some of them are so strange and bizarre that you won't believe they actually exist. Instead of using pictures, I decided to place one video (when available) for each animal for your viewing pleasure.

If the videos don't appear make sure you download flashplayer.

Please note that the list is on growing. It started with just 8 strange animals and now has more than 20. You may want to return every now and then to see if there are any new additions!

If you enjoyed the hub, please consider giving a thumbs up and sharing it with your friends. Feel free to leave a comment for any questions, if you have a weird animal recommendation or whatever!

So let me introduce you to some of the craziest and strangest animals in existence:

Giant Isopod

This alien looking creature is actually related to the common woodloose that most of us have seen.It lives in the deep, cold waters of the Atlantic. It's a harmless animal that eats dead matter that it founds in the ocean floor.

Giant isopods can reach a weight of up to 1.7 kg and a height of 76 centimeters.Considering that "normal" isopod species rarely reach a size of 5 centimeters , their size fact is truly astonishing.

Like the woodlouse they can curl and form a "ball" ,with only the tough shell being exposed.

Giraffe Weevil

The giraffe weevil is a weevil species that was only recently discovered, in 2008.

As you have can see on the images, its named this way due to having an elongated neck, reminiscent of giraffes. The extended neck is an adaptation that assists these insect in building their nests. Males also use it when fighting other males, during courtship.

Glaucus atlanticus

Glaucus atlanticus (commonly known as sea swallow, blue angel, blue glaucus and blue dragon) is a beautiful species of small-sized sea slugs that seems like it came from another planet. It is a tiny creature, with an average length of only 3 centimetres (1.2 in).

The blue dragon is quite common, occurring all over the world, in areas with temperate and tropical waters.

Interestingly, the species not only feeds on the poisonous and deadly "Portuguese Man o' War" jellyfish but also absorbs its stinging nematocysts into its own flesh! Don't touch it with your bear hands else, you may receive a very painful sting.

Paedophryne amauensis

An animal can't be strange just for the way it looks. Take for example Paedophryne amauensis. It looks like your everyday tod. What's so strange about it, is its tiny stature. Adults have an average length of only 7.7 mm or about 0.3 inches!

Discovered in 2012, it still holds the record for world's smallest know vertebrate and frog. There are many fly species that are bigger than it, and as you can see in the image on the right it is dwarfed by a mere U.S dime !

Glasswing Butterfly

The glasswing butterfly is one of the few terrestrial animals that exhibit some kind of transparency. Their wings are almost entirely transparent, except for the borders. This allows this strange insect to better blend with the environment, reducing the chances of detection by predators.

An other interesting fact about them is that the caterpillars become poisonous, after consuming poisonous Centrum plants. Click here if you want to read more about this unique butterfly.

Narwhal Video

The narwhal is a whale species that lives in the Arctic. The males of this beautiful species have a big ,long and straight tusk that extends from their upper left jaw. This tusk is 2- meters in length which is very big when compared to the body length of narwhals (4 to 5 meters). There have also been some rare reports of narwhals having two tusks.

The Jesus Christ Lizard

The Jesus Christ Lizard is a lizard that can be found in Central and South American rainforests.

The Jesus Lizard can actually walk, or better, run on water to avoid enemies and predators. Check the video, the snake just seems so frustrated. Poor, poor snake. You won't have your lunch today :(

The platypus is by far nature's most strange animal. Some jokingly say that god was high when he created it. There are so many weird things about it that I don't know where to start from.

First, its has a really crazy appearance, looking like a hybrid between an otter, a duck and a beaver.

However, it's other qualities that make this mammal so...not mammal-like. First, along with the echidna, its the only mammal that lays eggs. No, its not a typo. It lays eggs! Want more? It is also one of the handful of mammals that have electroreception. Like sharks, they detect the electrical fields produced by other animals, mainly its prey.

Finally, its again one of the few mammals that not only produces venom but also has a precise delivery mechanism (special spurs in its hind legs). I challenge you to find a mammal with so many strange traits. There is no chance you will!

Thorny Dragon

The thorny dragon (Moloch horridus) is a species of lizard found exclusively in Australia. As you can see on the video, its body is covered with countless sharp and hard spines that protect it from potential predators. Just imagine swallowing this thing!

What is so strange about this animal is the method it employs to find and drink water. Just check the attached video at 3:52.

The animal is also known as the thorny dragon, because it has one large -compared to the others- spine above each eye.

Leafy Sea Dragon

Leafy sea dragons are animals living in the coasts of Australia. They are related to sea horses but belong to a different family.

In my opinion they are one of the most beautiful animals out there. Leafy sea dragons are masters of camouflage. They look like sea weeds and even when they swim, they just look like a seaweed floating in the water. Check this small documentary, I am sure you will be amazed!

Naked Mole Rat

The naked mole rat (Heterocephalus glabera ) is a burrowing rodent and the only representative of the genus Heterocephalus.

This weird animal has a series of unique traits that enables it to survive under the harsh conditions that characterize its underground environment. Two of them are its inability to feel pain and a very low metabolic rate.

Also known as sand puppy, it occurs to the drier parts of the tropical grasslands of East Africa, predominantly southern Ethiopia, Kenya, and Somalia.

Japanese spider Crab

The Japanese crab holds the records for biggest crab. The leg span of this animal can be up to 3,6 metres whereas individuals may weigh to be up to 20 kg! As the name implies, the japanese spider crab can only be found in the waters of Japan.

Frill necked Lizard

This lizard can be found in northern Australia. The frill necked lizard is of course named after its large frill that expands when threatened. Another nickname of this lizard is the "bicycle" lizard. This name was given because of the weird and funny way the species runs. Check it out in the video provided.

Coconut Crab

The Coconut crab is the biggest arthropod that lives in the land. It can be found in many Indo-Pacific islands so coming across one is highly unlikely.T

They are nocturnal animals usually emerging only during the nigth to forage. If you ever happen to visit Tokyo, know that you can buy one as a pet from there :)

And yes, this thing bites and it bites very hard!

Featherless Chickens

The featherless chicken is the result of crazy experimenting by humans.Supposedly, it has the advantage of coping better in hot climates than normal chickens do. Also it's more energy efficient and requires less food, since it doesn't produce feathers.

This animal is a prime example of what humans are capable of doing in the name of money.. For some, this is just an ugly chicken. An abomination that should be banned. To me, a chicken can be only one thing. Delicious !

Chinese Giant Salamander

The chinese giant salamander isn't your everyday salamander. It can reach a length of 1,8 metres (that is 6 ft long!). The chinese giant salamander is endemic to rocky mountain streams and lakes of China. Obviously, this magnificent animal holds the record for largest salamander.

Unfortunately, the species is critically endangered.. All thanks to human related activities.

Komodo Dragon

The komodo dragon is the largest species of lizard. It can grow to be 3 meters long, with the largest observed specimen being a whooping 3,13 meters. If you ever see one , don't play fetch with it.

There have been reports of humans being eaten by this frightening animal. Don't mess with it and it won't mess with you. But if it gets too close than you'd better start running. Or climb a tree.

Belgian blue

Belgian blue or else known as the super cow. I guess this is the bovine version of Arnold Schwarzenegger. No, this cow isn't on steroids. Like the featherless chicken, its the result of human experimentation and selective breeding.

Ocean Sunfish

The ocean sunfish is the heaviest bony fish, with an average weight of 1 tone. Despite its great volume ,as you can judge by its looks, its harmless to humans, consuming only jellyfish in large quantities.

It won't try to hunt you, but better keep a distance if you ever see one. After all, its immense size and weight is enough to cause injuries!

Hammerhead Slug

As the name suggests, the "hammerhead slug" has a half-moon shaped head. Scientifically described as Bipalium kewense, this is not the everyday worm you will find in your garden. This weird creature not only holds the record for world's largest flatworm, but is also one of the few flatworms that actually live on land.

The species originates from Southeast Asia but thanks to horticultural practises it can now be found in the Hawaiian Islands and the tropical parts of South America.Other sightings include the UKs, China, Japan, New Zealand and many other places.

Disgusting Fact: It defecates from the mouth!

Giant Oarfish

The giant oarfish (or else known as king of herrings), is the largest bony fish in existence. Many sea monster legends are attributed to appearances of this weird animal. Although frightening in appearance, it's pretty much harmless, only eating zooplankton and small crustaceans!

Mexican Mole Lizards

The Mexican mole lizard is a really strange animal that seems like the combination of an earthworm, a snake and a lizard..It's so cute and weird, no wonder why its one of my favorites. Make sure to check it out!

Tongue Eating Louse

The tongue eating louse is a truly bizarre and frightening parasite. Essentially, it replaces itself with the host's tongue! The host continues living normally with its new tongue!

Don't worry! You aren't getting a new tongue anytime soon as this parasitic nightmare affects only certain species of fish.

Honey Pot Ants

This is probably one the weirdest type of ant! Honey pot ants literally spend their lives eating and drinking. And when food and water is in shortage, those little fat-asses spit the food they have been gorging with, sharing it with the rest of the nest! Please note that in each nest, only a few lucky ones get to be honey ants. Also note that this honey-class exists only in a few species and not all ants. In case you wonder, yes some of the species are edible. For instance, Camponotus inflatus are edible and form an occasional part of the diet of various Australian Aboriginal peoples.

Jump to 1:01 of the attached video to see these weird ants in action

Red Panda

Red pandas are named this way because they were once believed to be closely related to the giant panda. However, genetic studies have shown that they are more closely related to raccoons and weasels.

They are solitary, secretive, docile and unbelievably cute creatures, found in Nepal, China, India Bhutan and the northern Myanmar.

Chambered Nautilus

The Chambered Nautilus is the largest, most widespread species of nautilus. It’s closely related to octopuses, snails, squids and clams. It is a living fossil, since it has remained virtually unchanged, for more than 500 million years. Its shell has a maximum diameter of 27 cm. The species uses jet-like propulsion, attaining speeds of about two knots.

Bonus Animal: Promachoteuthis sulcus

Promachoteuthis sulcus is a rare, very small squid, that is known from only one specimen that was caught in 2007. In one of the very view pictures that have gone public, the creature appears to have a human-like mouth with actual teeth.

In reality, the teeth are simply circular, folded lips. In other words, there is nothing strange with this animal. It is just a case of let's say bad.. photography!

Readers, this the end of this hub. I hope you enjoyed this article as much as I did writing it. I will keep the article updated and post more strange animals from time to time. If you did enjoy it please give a positive rating and don't forget to comment!

Very interesting and a well-rounded variety. God truly does create some wondrous creatures. I think I like the frill lizard the best - he reminds me of the dinosaur in Jurassic Park. Well done and voted up.

    Very well, Kofantom.

Just don't forget human species as weird creation products. But don't spend a lifetime at that neither.
