The American Pit Bull Terrier Dog Breed

Updated on August 31, 2015

The American Pit Bull Terrier is a cross breed of bulldog and terrier. These crosses were used for competitions. In such a contest was wagered on how quickly a dog could kill a certain number of rats. Another application was in England and Ireland extremely popular dog fight (dog against dog) to ban all animal fights in England in 1835. With Pit Arena for was dog fighting designates what finds himself in the race name.

In the United States these dogs won even before the Civil War widespread popularity. 1898 founded CB Bennett the United Kennel Club (UKC). This was the first club that entered the new breed American Pit Bull Terrier, the first registry received the male Bennett's Ring. The UKC published both a breed standard and rules for dog fighting. This UKC still exists today, is responsible for the APBT and many other races.

1909 founded Guy McCord, the American Dog Breeder's Association (ADBA), also they registered the APBT. The ADBA also organizes dog shows and Weight Pulling Competitions (weight pulling competitions). After several disputes about the breed name, Yankee Terrier was quite common, the decided American Kennel Club (AKC) (later the name Staffordshire Terrier American Staffordshire Terrier) and recognized this in 1936 as a breed, which in AKC formally a new race alongside the APBT originated.

On a recognition by the AKC, however, the American Pit Bull Terrier breeders put no value. Many good working breeds were from people who bred for the show ring, severely damaged many Pit Bull breeders feared the same thing for their breed. On the other side of the AKC clearly took away from the story of the race and its associated past the dog fights. Then the UKC American Pit Bull Terrier and American Staffordshire Terrier started twice entered as same race. Although any breed is mentioned in the pedigrees, you could also enter unchanged intersections.

The Pit Bull is a compact dog up to 27 kg (60 lbs), the desired size is for males 46-53 cm (18-21 inches), bitches 43-51 cm (17-20 inches), deviations tolerated so long as the dog is proportioned accordingly. His coat is short, dense, shiny, all colors and drawings allowed (except Merle). Blue eyes are no longer permitted according to the latest UKC- and ADBA standard.

The focus of the breed originally was the fighting spirit, the appearance did not matter, so it is highly variable. All breed typical characteristics of the American Pit Bull Terrier can be in contrast to other breeds to the original mission of the dogs struggle traced. This also means that the dog could bite any humans in the dog fight and dogs who did, as you biter were taken from breeding. American Pit Bull Terrier had to be led in the fight of their handlers and are therefore mostly towards people very willing subordination and not suitable as guard dogs.

The American animal welfare organization ASPCA describes the Pit Bull as a generally intelligent and gentle dog. In the breed standard of the UKC he will be an excellent family dog, but little suitable watchdog described. In a book about the breed, it is said that he "playmate, Clown, comforter or excellent bed warmer". In order to obtain this desired behavior of an American Pit Bull Terriers, he must carefully socialized and become familiar with different environmental factors. Todd Fenstermacher writes in his book American Pit Bull Terrier - Today:

"Although the Pit Bull is a very good family dog, he is certainly not a breed for everyone. Only dog lovers with a strong sense of responsibility should such a dog get into the house. Keeping a Pit Bull and care for is very different from the possession of other dogs. People who want to keep a pit bull must be willing to educate themselves strictly. You must belong to the dog friends who are able to follow the advice of the breeder and the other Pit Bull Owner. "

The American Pit Bull Terrier is considered by many organizations as a rescue dog used. The police put him as Beagle for intoxicants and explosive one. In Germany, hardly known as a sport, it is in the United States as a draft dog (WEIGHT Pulling, Dog-Cart) used.

The muscular appearance of the American Pit Bull Terriers and the polarizing media coverage have meant that these dogs also for fashion dog were irresponsible dog owners. While a holder group used their dog to spread fear, ignore other friends of the American Pit Bull Terrier is a danger that can be caused by dogs in general, what repeatedly in children in families and communities to accidents with bite injuries resulting.
