The French Bulldog! Fun, Intelligent and Playful! Check out this Adorable Breed!

Updated on April 9, 2010

Simply put, French Bulldogs are sweet natured clowns! In my opinion, their large ears and wrinkled muzzles are adorable! Originally bred in France (hence the name, French Bulldog) this wonderful breed is loyal, intelligent and loves to be part of a family! Developed as companion dogs, this fashionable pup stands eleven to thirteen inches in height, weighs twenty-four to twenty-nine pounds and lives approximately ten to twelve years.

The French Bulldog comes in several colors including brindle, fawn or pied (pied means predominantly white with brindle markings). Their coats are very short and only require weekly brushings so that dead hair can be removed. Though their coats are easy to care for (they hardly shed at all), they do have other grooming needs. The face of the French Bulldog requires daily cleanings with a damp cloth as their wrinkles tend to collect dirt. If not cleaned properly, they can develop skin problems (such as sores and infections).

French Bulldogs make wonderful family pets. They do well with "sensible" children and love to play! Children should be taught to respect this breed as they don't handle "rough play" very well. If you are searching for a hiking partner the French Bulldog is NOT for you. Though this breed enjoys daily walks, they tend to over-heat easily and can have difficulty breathing in hot weather. During the spring and summer months, the French Bulldog should be monitored closely as they can develop heatstroke rather quickly. For more information about dogs and heatstroke, please read:  Beat the Heat, Recognizing and Preventing Heatstroke in Your Dog.

This dog breed does well in a city or suburban home. They make wonderful companions for the elderly as well as couch potatoes (no offense!). These dogs are very happy and can adapt to most home environments. The French Bulldog LOVES attention! If you have a demanding job or don't spend much time at home, you may want to consider a different breed as the French Bulldog will become sad and depressed if left alone for long periods of time.

Believe it or not, this little but sturdy breed is quite easy to train! They pick up basic commands quickly and love to please their owners. Obviously, due to their breathing and heat issues they are NOT agility dogs. However, if you want a fun, clownish dog who will obey simple commands, look no further as the French Bulldog may be the dog for you!

French Bulldogs can be very possessive. It is very important that they are socialized early and often! Some male French Bulldogs can be extremely dominant and territorial. Having said that, they are generally good natured dogs and usually get along well with other pets. It should be noted that French Bulldogs have a tendency to chase cats…just something to keep in mind if you are considering this breed and happen to own a cat or two.

Over all, the French Bulldog is loaded with personality and is a lovable and loyal companion. One thing I forgot to point out is that they can be quite gassy…but hey, aren't we all!? If you are looking for a dog that is medium in size and lots of fun…this may be the breed for you! Please consider adoption…after all, it is the best option! Woof!
