The Story of Major, my Loyal Friend & Companion

The Puppies

Sheba was lovely; the perfect family dog, she was gentle, quiet and friendly. In fact my son spent much of his toddler years lying down in the dog basket with her. What a surprise when we found out one day, after a clandestine encounter that she was pregnant!

She had 8 puppies and they were adorable. I have some wonderful memories of those first 6 weeks caring for and loving them.

There was no way we could keep them all, but I did promise my daughter she could choose one to keep.

She chose ‘Elsa’.

Elsa was pretty and cute looking, but she wasn’t ‘Major’.

Although the puppies were lots of work, generally they were well behaved and quiet. Sheba was a good mother and would wash the puppies constantly for hours.

Major Chose Us

Major was the exception - he was so differrent to his brothers and sisters.

All the other puppies would lie quietly in the basket, content with their mother, but Major would be constantly yelping to get out.

I just don’t like it in here

It’s crowded

Quit climbing over me

Move over

I’m all wet again

Why does the ‘Big One’ keep doing that?

I don’t want to be in here

I want ‘Her’ to hold me again

I love her smell

Her touch, her warmth

I love her voice

If I make some noise

She might come again

How do I tell my daughter, that I don’t want us to keep Elsa? Major is the one, he had chosen us!

The days went by, and one by one the puppies went to their new homes. I got more and more distraught; I just could not part with Major because I just knew he was meant to stay with us. There was no way we could keep 2 puppies so I decided to try and talk my daughter around. This was not easy and there were lots of tears, more from me than my daughter. Why was I getting so emotional about a dog?

My daughter didn’t agree readily, so there were lots of promises and treats attached to the agreement.

The relief was enormous, Major could stay.

Life is good

My mistress takes me out

The ‘Big One’ comes as well

She’s ok

But she keeps fussing over me

We go over fields

I run for miles

Everything smells so good

I love it when my mistress

Throws the ball

I run after it

And take it back to her

This pleases her

She pats my head

And says well done

Then suddenly

The ‘Big One’ went

I don’t know where

But I never saw her again

Time passed

One day everything changed

‘The man’ was gone

The house was quiet and still

My mistress was sad

Many days passed

Full of sadness

I stayed close to comfort ‘Her’

One day it was different

There was an air of excitement

All the family came to help

Busily packing everything into boxes

I followed my mistress

Room to room

She patted me reassuringly

We had a new home

I loved it here

There were fields and trees

Long walks

My mistress laughed again

A new beginning

They were good times together

Sometimes

As I lay at my mistress’ feet

I’d look at her and see

Her thoughts far away

The sadness in her eyes

I will watch over her

And keep her safe always

The years have passed

And I am weary

My eyes want to close

I need to sleep

I am in my mistress’ arms

I look up to her

Her eyes are so sad

I wag my tail

One last time

Major was my loyal friend and companion for 15 years.

Through some very difficult times in my life he never left my side.

Dancing about today I discovered a wonderful story and warm bit of poetry. I thank you for your sharing as it does come close to heart. A dear friend and companion oddly online was another's pet, Max, a most wonderful and playful dog passed away not very long ago. I used Max as a mascot here at HP for a bit on all my hubs. This sharing of your most loving friends history and companionship brought Max alive for me again. Thank you Movie Master . . .

We lost our beloved Shih Tzu shortly after she delivered four healthy puppies. I know how the heartbreak feels when you lose a pet. Major was a very special dog, and I'm sure you still miss him.

I can just look at a photo of our beautiful little pet and cry all over again. I enjoyed seeing all your great photos of the puppies, etc.

      Voted UP.

Oh what a beautiful hub; it brought tears to my eyes. We lost our dog Lucy this past summer due to her pancreas--she was only eight. I'm usually a strong person but I'm still grieving over the loss. I can't tell you how many times I wrote articles about her, she truly was an inspiration. When she passed the vet gave us a condolence card and in it was a poem called Rainbow Bridge; http://www.rainbowbridge.com/Poem.htm I don't know if you ever read it, the author is unknown but it hits all the right notes and brings tears to my eyes every time I read it.

You wrote a great tribute to Major. I can tell he picked a great home, he looks so happy. Thanks for sharing :)

Lesley, we share a name and a love for our special pets! I smiled ear to ear through this entire story - until the end - when i burst into tears!

I soooo get it - on every level - from day one when Major chose you - till...death..

my baby, Tiger, a 90 pound labX - rescued me 13 years ago, and, she's getting tired, and wants to sleep..

i massage her from tip to tail every morning and do my best to breath fresh clean life into her..i just built her a...ramp..so she doesn't have to jump to get outside..etc...etc...i'd carry her if i could..

(wondering if you saw that news piece about the man and his 18 year old shepherd that he took into the lake every day to relieve the dogs arthritis? He just held the dog in his arms, and the dog rested his head on his Master's shoulder and shut his eyes...Well, people saw it and sent money and not only does his dog now get the pain meds he needs - but he started a foundation for other old dogs who need medicine!)

i'm pretty sure you read my tribute to tiger, but if not - feel free - you'll smile too..

i don't think i want to read anything else for a bit...

i wonder, did you get another puppy...

Now this hub Movie Master was so touching I almost cried reading it, Your Major reminded me of a dog I once had at one time when I was a little boy.

I use to ride that doggy like he was a horse, wow the good times we have with some pretty awesome life long companions, thanks for the sweet hub here you've shared for us all, it was truly awe inspiring and heart felt as well.

I also love the poems, they made it flow even more smoothly, and I know your daughter changed her mind years later about being against you keeping the cute puppy, because he looked awesome as a adult as well.

Thumbs up and out, Bravo on such a beautiful hub.

Your poem also provided a glimpse into the highs and lows of your life. I just read your interview with Maria and one thing has become perfectly clear, you are one courageous woman.

Oh Lesley, my animal loving friend,

This was such a beautiful piece, complete with pictures of you and your precious brood of pups. I don't think I could have let any of them go but there is the practical side of me too and I understand. Eight is more than enough.

It is uncanny that a certain one will pick us and when we lock eyes with them, forever more it is as if we were always meant to be together. You've captured the bond of love that they give and that we have for them in your beautifully worded poetry and narrative. I feel as if I knew Major through your words. Absolutely wonderful.

I'm so sorry he is no longer on this earthly plane but he waits for you with all the others who have gone on before us after helping us through these difficult journeys we call our lives. I feel certain that we will see them again one day, because it wouldn't be Heaven without them to share it with us.

      All the best to you,

      Peg

Had to grab a kleenex on your touching story about Major. Dogs just have a way of grabbing your heart in ways that you never imagined possible. I'm a dog person and had a great childhood dog and currently have two dogs but Joey is like your Major. He was with me during my hard days of chemo and radiation. One of my hubs is a story about Joey knowing that I was going to have a severe reaction to a nausea drug. His intuition told me something was amiss. Isn't it beautiful how dogs pick us? I believe a dog knows where he/she needs to be. I think animals are angels that help get us through this journey on earth. Thanks so much for sharing your beautiful story of the love between you and Major. I'm still choked up :-)

What a great dog Major was. I am glad you had pictures of him and the gang as pups. This was a great tribute. I had a Dalmation names Lucky growing up, but we had a little yard. He spent most his time in the corner of the yard. My dad gave him away after 2 years so he could stretch his legs on a big farm. It was worth his happiness. Great story, up, awesome, and beautiful.

I know how difficult it is to loose a dog, especially a companion and a friend. I have had my share of pets and they do become part of your family, as our cat is now. This is a lovely tribute, as they live on through our memories. Thanks for sharing this very heartfelt hub Movie Master. Take Care. :)

      Regards,

      Movie,

This is a lovely tribute to your special "pawmate". Major looks like he had a life filled with love. I lost my Alvin at 15 and share your loss. I always believe our babies are playing happily in wait to see us again, over the Rainbow Bridge. Voted UP & AB, mar.

What a beautiful tribute for a special friend. I love the way you wrote the poems from his point of view. I must admit I have the box of tissues beside me. He connected with you as a pup and you had 15 wonderful years with him. I'm sure he is looking down on you right now and wagging that tail. You will hold such wonderful memories.

This was a wonderful story! Isn´t it funny how it just clicks with some dogs! We just know that he/she is the right one for us. I have experienced the same thin myself with a puppy.

You wrote a fantastic tribute to Major and a dog like that will never be forgotten.

Movie Master, this poem is a fitting tribute to your "Major". The narration through his point of view serves to complement your commentary. We dog lovers can certainly empathise with your loss of a loyal companion. I would recommend the book, "A Dog's Purpose", by W. Bruce Cameron. It is also features a canine narrator. Awesome and thumbs up!! Regards, Robert
