This is Crazy! Iran Outlaws Dogs

Updated on July 18, 2011

Iran is such a hypocrisy. Such a paradox. A country governed by a bunch of loonies and the sad thing is, most of its citizens are forced to buy into the looniness. The good news, young people always find a way to circumvent authority. Most do, if they oppose a regulation or law.

The holy morality police have been given the power of the Fatwa to fine owners of dogs used a pets. The fine can be between $500-1000, and the dog is taken. Poof! the pooch is gone. The "police" may also take your driver license and your car. In iran, dogs as pets is forbidden and found to be "unclean" in the Islamic religion. Of course, what about cats? birds? rabbits? No mention of these pets. Are they cleaner? How?

Anyway, except for a small group o privileged Iranians who have dogs as pets, millions of Iranians know and do not believe the Fatwa is justified. They see how everyone else in world lives via satellite TV. Dogs are wonderful pets. Althought banned, black market puppy machines abound thanks to Internet, websites in Iran like,Woof, Woof Iran Digital Pets, Persianpet, Petpars, pups are smuggled in from neighboring countries. Business is thriving. Some pups sell to $10,000, most are $500. Still, owners avoid detection by taking the pets out for midnight walks, hiding the pup and going to the countryside. Just buying a pup is like a CIA novel, where the buyer is blindfolded and taken to a secret, covert kennel for pup selection ONLY after an hour long interview to weed out secret covert police looking for violators. Hey, this IS serious stuff in Iran.

While importing dogs into Iran for sale is illegal, bringing a dog in as a personal pet is okay. Huh??? Are Iranian laws always so hypocritical? I thought dogs as pets were illegal? They are, yet it is fine to bring it into the country as a pet . Once in country, it becomes illegal! OMG.

Crazy!
