1 Labrador Retriever

The Labrador Retriever is very popular amongst the dog world and has been named the most popular dog breed in the US for 18 consecutive years. The lab is known for his willingness to please his master. The labrador is also known for his ability to help the blind and provide needed assistance in search and rescue efforts. The labs coat is water resistant and with regular grooming will stay shiny and healthy. The labrador retriever will thrive as part of a family unit. He is a great choice when choosing a dog breed and one of the best dog breeds for children.

2 Yorkshire Terrier

The Yorksire Terrier also known as a (Yorky) have great personalities and are known to be very affectionate with their owners. The coloring is generally black and tan and while Yorkies do not need alot of exercise they tend to be very brave and energetic. With long hair the Yorkie will need reular brushing to keep his/her coat clean and shiny. Most Yorkies weigh between 4-7 pounds and enjoy regular interaction with people. Another great choice when it comes to choosing a dog breed for your kids and family.

3 German Shepherd

The German Shepherd is known as a valient police dog , military dog , and a great guard dog. Dont let this fool you though , The German Shepherd is a wonderful family dog that is easy to train , a great show dog and is easily approachable. The German Shepherd comes in most colors except white. He has a strong muscular build and requires regular grooming and exercise. This is my personal favorite when it comes to choosing the best dog breed for your children to protect them and be trustworthy for the whole family. This is a dog breed you can depend on.

4 Golden Retriever

He has a light to dark golden coat and is very intelligent. He is a working class dog and is very eager to please. The Golden Retriever is known best for his hunting abilities and search and rescue qualitites. He is an active and sporty breed that can adapt to a variety of living conditions as long as he gets regular excercise. He has a water repellant coat and is a joy to own. This animal has a great temporment and would be a great addition to any family. This dog is great for kids also because they are active and love to play all of the time.

5 Beagle

The Beagle is a sturdy hunting dog and appears as a minature foxhound. He has an easy to care for coat and has become a family favorite because of his personality. The Beagle is tri-colr as they call it coming in red , white , and lemon. He is a happy go lucky dog as the Beagle is used to being a pack dog and gets along with other dogs just fine. They love to follow their noses which can be very entertaining , yet be careful they dont get wrapped up in some kind of mischief. Very friendlt dog and one of the best for children becuse they are non aggresive and very protective when needed.

6 Boxer

The Boxer is an intelligent dog yet very powerful and kind. The Boxer is a very protective dog by nature and at the same time is very loving and true to his family. This dog breed has been known to be successful as a courier especially during times of war and also a seeing eye dog. The Boxer breed is known for its affectionate personality towards its family and friends. The Boxer is a great family choice and is patient and very forgiving among children.

7 Dachsund

The Dachsund which means badger dog in german is friendly and has a keen sense of smell. They are very eager hunters and look for prey above and below ground. They are known for their very long and low set bodies. They come in different sizes from small from 11 pounds and under to larger which would be 15 to 30 pounds. They are a great pet for any household and require regular grooming and a medium amount of exercise.

8 Bulldog

Bulldogs are well known for their (big mug) and loose jawed mouth. A great sized head and medium sized body Bulldogs are definately a sight to see. They are not considered lap dogs but you will get the feeling thats what they want to be. Bulldogs are considered an excellent family dog because of their easy going disposition. This dog breed require minimal grooming and excersise but is prone to breathing problems and over-heating in warm weather.

9 Poodle

The Poodle is one of the high achievers of the dog world. The Poodle is considered to be high maintenance because of its lengthy coat. This breed is exceptionaly smart and easy to train and actually excells in training. This breed actually comes from Germany and started off being a water retriever or water dog. The Poodle comes in a variety of colors including white , black , apricot , and grey. This dog breed is also regarded as a good family pet.

10 Shih Tzu

The Shih Tzu is a compact and solid little dog. It has a very long and flowing coat and the word Shih Tzu comes from the word meaning lion. This dog breed is very sweet and easy going but is not afraid to stand up for himself. Generally the sole purpose of the Shih Tzu is as a companion. He is a lively and trusting breed usually weighing between 9-16 pounds. This breed needs minimal exercise and is a very family oriented dog. The breeds long coat requires regukar brushing and maintenance. This dog breed is also considered to be family oriented and is a good choice as one of the best dog breeds for children because they love to be cuddled.

      Your list is fairly good, but I think you missed some big breed gems for kids -- Collie, Great Dane, and Newfoundland -- that are all on the Animal Planet list as being great for younger members of the family. My Newfie helped raise my granddaughter; they are nannies by nature! These big breeds know how to be gentle with kids, and they are loyal and companionable.

      Your German Shepherd, Dachsund, Shih Tzu, and Yorkshire Terrier are more active and need more supervision and make better pals for adults.

      All my rescue mixed-breeds, larger dogs, and my Newfie, were sweet companions, but my Newf was unbeatable!

      Interesting hub. Thanks for sharing! We have a dog called a Mountain Feist and she is very, very well behaved and loves people, including children. She is a huge part of our family! We like to say she is a "pound puppy" that hit the jackpot!!
