Indian mastiffs are the largest and strongest mastiffs from North India. They are also known as the Kumaon mastiff, Sindh mastiff, Pakistani bully, and even Indian bully dogs. In Pakistan, they are known as Bulli mastiff or Bulli Kutta. The name comes from the Hindi/Urdu word bohli, meaning "heavily wrinkled" and kutta, which means dog.

Indian mastiffs are very rough-and-tough and are well-suited for the Indian subcontinent's climate. They were bred to protect their owners from wild animals and help them hunt, which is very strong, heavy-boned, broad-headed, and muscular, with high energy and stamina and known for their dog to dog aggression.

A Gaddi Kutta is a mastiff-type mountain dog from the western Himalayan region, originated from Himachal and available in North Indian states Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Kashmir. They are also known as Indian panther hounds and Mahidant mastiffs, Initially bred for hunting purposes, the multi-talented Gaddi Kutta is widely used by local shepherds, mostly Gaddis (from the tribe of the same name). They are said to be strong enough to repulse attacks by snow leopards and to have the intelligence to herd stray sheep and goats back to their pens.

This distinct breed is developed recently from Tehri Garhwal, in the Uttrakhand State of India. They got their name Bangar Mastiff or Bangara Mastiff, from the name of the place, they were developed.

An Indian army Major W.V. Soman created them in 1963, by mixing between Native Bhutia dogs with other native dogs. Initial, y they were used by local people for herding yak, sheep and to protect the villagers from ferocious wild animals like leopard, wolf etc.

The Bakharwal dogs are an indigenous breed, developed from Himalayan origin. They were bred exclusively by Muslim nomadic group called Gujjars, to protect their livestock from predators. This dog was created by the king of Rampur, the city in North Indian state Uttar Pradesh. The city, Rampur lies between two well-known Indian cities Delhi and Bareilly. Rampur hounds got their names after their origin city Rampur.

Basically, they were created to hunt deer, fox, jackal and rabbits. Later they were also, used to herd abandons war horses. Rampur Hounds deliberate the test of courage, they have the excellent running stamina and speed and are capable of jumping over a six-foot high fence by their standing position. Rampur Greyhound is the fastest running dog of India that can reach up to 40 miles per hours. In the wild, they are able to take down a golden jackal. Rampur Hounds are reserved dogs and known as a one man dog. They do not welcome other pets and don’t like strangers to touch them.

Commonly people consider Kumaon Mastiff, Sindh Mastiff, Alangu mastiff and Indian Bully Kutta are the same dog. Which is more or less correct, but real Kumayun mastiff were the naturally developed Mastiffs from Kumayun district, which are almost extinct or mixed with other breeds. They are an intelligent, strong and courageous dogs that have similar physical traits like Indian Mastiff (Bully Kutta).

Himalayan mastiffs are native to the Himalayan region. They're known as Himalayan guard dogs or indigenous Tibetan mastiffs. This is a calm and lovable dog who loves to please its master and be around its owner and family. One important fact: They cannot tolerate or survive the warm weather. They also do not like the company of other dogs, and a full-grown male is capable of taking down two wolves on its own. Usually, they are gentle and calm, Himalayan Mastiffs can be very ferocious if something goes wrong. They are known to fight to the death. They are the only purebred Indian Mastiffs and unfortunately, only a few are left. This breed is identified as endangered.

Mahratta Greyhounds are the rare breed from the native province of Maharashtra. They are medium sized hound dogs, like Saluki or a smaller version of Indian Caravan Hounds or Rampur hound. They were used for hunting hare and other small prey in farms by farmers. The common color pattern consists of dark blue and tan. The coat is short and provides good protection against the various Indian elements. Unfortunately, nowadays it’s very difficult to find a pure breed Mahratta hound.

Kaikadi is a perfect watchdog, as a result, the nomadic life they lead watching over herds, they are also adept at hunting hare as well as vermin. Kaikadi is the rare dogs only available in Maharashtra and their price and breed specification is not clear.

Soriala Greyhounds are the native from West Bengal, India and known as Sarail Hounds in Bangladesh. This breed is acknowledged to endangered category and has the risk of extinction. Only a few dogs of this breed are left. Some dogs of this breed are present in Bangla Desh also. This dog was created to hunt deer and hare, And to protect livestock from jackal and wolves. They are considered, to be the further extension of Rampur Hounds and Unlikely to other sight hounds, they have a broad and strong jaw.
