Toy Dogs that Stay Small Forever

If you are looking for a dog that will stay small, there are a number of toy breeds that do not grow big. If you consider buying a breed that does not grow above 30 pounds in weight, there are several you can choose from.

Toy dogs are alternatively called lap dogs although this term is only used to refer to those breeds amongst the toy breed list that can be held on the lap. In most cases these lap dogs may those toy breeds that are relatively smaller in size and have a friendly temperament.

Lap dogs are considered as the group of dogs that will stay small, although this is a general term used to refer to such dogs but not directed to a specific breed of dog.

Most of this dog breeds will have a good temperament and will not be aggressive towards children. Toy dogs that are playful make the best family pets for a young family with little children.

Basically, spaniels and terriers will be a perfect match for a family that is active and requires an active toy breed.

Considerations for classification of Toy Dogs

The smallest dog breed is often referred to as tea cup size dogs. They are very small in size that someone would doubt whether they are dogs.

So the determining factors whether a dog breed qualifies to be on the toy breeds list are as follows:

Size of the Dog

Sometimes the definition of a toy dog breed can be very confusing since different registration clubs will have different standards. Important factor in all these classification is the size of the dog as measured by the appearance and the weight of the dog.

Some clubs will classify a toy breed as a dog that does not exceed 20 pounds in weight. There is often some mis-categorization amongst breeders that will talk about ‘toy…..’ If a dog is classified as a toy breed, there is no other smaller sub category under such a breed.

When people talk about a ‘Giant….’ and ‘Toy….’ under the same breed it’s not correct. Basically those are the facts that revolve around the classification of small dog breeds as toy breeds.
