My Koi

This is my butterfly Koi a 5" long sometimes they called it mariposa koi. I find it very beautiful because of the strong color of yellow on her head. I think it's belong to HIkari muji koi. Breeding koi is so much fun specially if you have a lot of varieties of color in your pond. Well taking about varieties of koi - there are 12 categories of them but the most popular are the Kohaku, sanke, Showa, Utsuri, Doitsu, beko, tancho and it came also different variety such as ginrin and kin. Keeping Koi is not only a hobby or pet but it is also an Art.

What is the best part of this Koi is that can live up to 200years old if carefully keep and maintain the water quality of your pond. This fish can grow up to 2 meters long. For Koi with an age of 30 - 40 it can grow to 1 meter and consider very special and expensive...

So many koi lover said that Koi do not originate from Japan but from parts of Eastern Asia and China from where the climate is very suitable for this fish. They said it was originaly from the original koi called Magoi. This koi are kept in the pond of in the rice padi by most of the Chinese people as a source of protein during winter season.

Then hundreds years later or perhaps 600 - 800 years later this koi start to mutate from black to red and gray, then White and yellow. But the most popular in Japan was call KOHAKU. More and more varieties are followed such as the Asagi and Higoi up till now many of the modern days have introduce new varsities of Koi.

Later a Carp was introduce in Germany that is why the meaning of Doitsu is German. This kind of Koi is scaleless and easier to clean because in Germany this fish also is their source of food. Then across breeding with the ASAGI produce what they called now SHUSUI. a very nice Beautiful koi...

This is the amazing thing about koi fish. Thousands of them may look the same and color but they never be the same because of their patterns. Each and every one of the has it's own unique pattern.

My Koi

These are my koi 1 yr old 5" long. They are ginrin butterfly and doitsu. Soon i will transfer them to the pond but before i do that, I just want to make sure that my koi are healthy enough before i introduce them to the pond. Because as my koi become bigger - they need also a bigger space to swim.

When you buy a koi – it is a good practice to quarantine your new koi before you introduce them to your new pond. New tap water in your pond should be leave for 5-7 days to neutralize the chlorine because introducing your koi directly to different water ph and condition could weaken the their immune system and could succumb within a very short period and eventually die.

Breeding & keeping koi in Southeast Asia is not that difficult because of tropical climate and the temperature for whole year round are equal. So you don’t need a water heater for your pond during winter. Just maintain the deep of your pond's water not less that 0.50m.

Buying a Koi

Koi lovers as myself has to be patient when taking care of koi or buying a koi. New koi that I bought from the pet shop will have to undergo quarantine because we are not so sure whether the koi are healthy or infected by parasites and bacterial because some koi are carrier even though they may look like healthy one. By this means you can prevent any diseases spreading to the other koi in your pond. The crucial time for koi was during transit – the koi more likely suffer stress for a long period of travel and during that time their immune system are weaken and vulnerable to bacterial infection. So what I did was when I reach at home, I will keep them first in separate clean aquarium to reduce their stresses, poured some treatment such as meteline blue to disaffect any bacteria’s that present from the previous koi’s water and I always replace about 20% of the aquarium’s water every other day for 2 weeks, observe the koi’s behaviors and evaluate their overall health and condition. The Signs of unhealthy Koi are as follows:

  1. The koi swims very slowly or stay in one corner only - even when you splash the water.
  2. The Koi swim slowly on the surface to graphs some air even there’s an aerator.
  3. Fin and dorsal keep tight and closed (Not Spreading)
  4. The koi sunk on the bottom of you aquarium and doesn’t move.
  5. Does not eat when you feed them.
  6. Swollen eyes.
  7. White spot on their tail, fin and dorsal.
  8. Scratching it body on the stone, glass or any hard object.
  9. Bleeding under the fin, dorsal or tail.
  10. Their gill not spreading when breathing.

So if your new koi shows like the above behavior – possibly they are very stress and weak, infected by a disease, parasites or bacteria. For best advice before buying your koi in the pet shop – observe the koi first in their aquarium and see if they have such behavior and signs like I mentioned above. If so, do not buy it.

Things to Plan & Prepare before buying a Koi

Keeping Koi’s as your pet is a great hobby… it’s not only by watching them swim beautifully in the pond but it help you out to relief your stress after work and helps you to relax - most of all I enjoyed very much feeding them by hand and it’s fun!

So here are the things that you have to prepare before buying a koi.

Pond – You have to decide how many koi’s that you are going to keep – so that you can provide enough space for the koi to swim. Over crowded will hinder the growth of your koi and will suffer stress.

Water pump – it’s depends to the size of your pond. The bigger your pond – the bigger horse power of water of pump you need to install. They also indicate the volume capacity of the water pump in cubic meter per hour or in cubic liter per hour.

Filter – It is very important to install filter in your pond to maintain your water clear as it will filter out all the small suspended particles from koi’s waste. There are so many types of filter but you can try to seek an advice from the koi’s dealer for best filter.

Water Plans – water plants are not only to beautify your pond but it is essential because it helps to reduce some toxic and pollution in your pond by absorbing such as ammonia produced from the rotten food and koi’s waste.

Koi Diseases

Sometime it is hard to notice if your koi has a diseases or developing a diseases in the pond because of we can see the koi from top view only. But for me I did it in my own way to keep and maintain my koi’s healthy. Once in every month I will take my koi from the pond one by one and put them into the aquarium where I can examine physically carefully the whole body of my koi such as the operculum, under the pectoral fin, pelvic fin, under the anal fin, caudal and dorsal fin, and eyes to see if there is a sign of white spot, anchor worm, fin rot, fish lice and saprolegnia fungus. Because these parasites are easily be seen from our naked eye.

White Spot:

White spot or Ich is a small tiny white spot attached on allover the body of the koi, fins and also their gills. It cause irritable to the koi that sometimes the koi will scratch their body on the hard object and finally injured themselves. Remedy for this disease are either you can use anti-ich solution, paracide green or myteline blue solution.

Anchor Worm

Anchor worm is a long rod form parasite about 10mm long. This anchor worm start from the gills of koi when hatch the male worm will hook under the scale of the koi’s skin. This will cause the skin of the koi to bleed and damage to the skin tissue. opening ot the skin tissue is vulnerable to fungal and bacteria infection. Remedy for this worm is available in all pet shops such as ProForm-LA, Trichloracide and Anchors Worm solution.

Fish lice

Fish lice is like a horseshoe fish form but only that this fish lice is very small about 6-8mm and transparent. This parasite is a blood sucker which it stick itself to the koi with his needle mouth part and inject a toxin fluid that causes the koi to irritate and rub their body to hard object. Remedy for this parasite are salt, trichloracide, anchor worm solution and malachite green.

Oh wow I love koi! When I look at these fish they just make me happy! lol Yes, I know I sound weird saying that, but it's true!

Probably the though, the explanation to why I love the Koi fish so much is because I think it's the association I have with "Koi and Good Chinese Restaurants.” Doesn’t get much better than Chinese food! lol
